I can’t believe it isn’t Candace Parker.

Why? This Nneka's third straight win. The rules and criteria would've been criticized or changed if Parker had won two straight by now.

@pilight: Is this the first time a rookie who has appeared in games for more than one team made the All-Rookie Team?

I did wonder if Evans might get in as the 5th member on that team for doing fuck all, rather than the other options who were going to get in for doing fuck all. People at least noticed she existed due to the trade mess. I had Carrington instead but it's basically choosing between two empty boxes.

Jewell Loyd is the 5th player to make All WNBA first team while not receiving any MVP votes that season. She follows Ticha Penicheiro in 2000, Sue Bird in 2003, Sylvia Fowles in 2010, and Skylar Diggins in 2014.

Loyd, of course, has NEVER received an MVP vote. Only Diggins made her first team All WNBA debut before receiving her first MVP vote of the previous names on the list.

Imagine an NBA player whose primary skill is scoring making all-league shooting 38% on a 36-win team while being a negative defensively.

WNBA voters have to become more educated.

Imagine not voting for BG for first team.

I want to hear a convincing argument for why she is not first team.

Almost every vote that wasn't for Griner was for Fowles. She was the clear leader and best player on a team that finished with a better record than Phoenix. She didn't have a teammate even sniff these awards, let alone be a first teamer. She was also voted the DPOY, voters are on record thinking she was better on that side of the ball.

I probably would have voted for Griner, but it's not like it's ridiculous to go with Fowles instead.

What I want to know is who got the four first-place votes that went to some other center ...

Brionna Jones, maybe, for someone who really values team wins? More realistically, I'd imagine someone put Wilson or JJones or Charles at center. I don't really understand why you'd want to cram in an extra forward over Griner or Fowles, but hey, that's why they use voting panels rather than one person. By my assessment the wisdom of the crowd got 9 out of 10 this year, which is more than usual, and that fourth guard spot was pretty wide open.

The NBA voting tends to be pretty strongly swayed by volume stats as well, to be fair.

Do voters get to decide what position a player is slotted into? Or is that proscribed by the league?

In the NBA they specify, although many people are eligible for multiple positions (forward/centers or guard/forwards). In the WNBA, last I heard, voters were just told to vote for players in the position in which they start (or that may have been re-worded slightly over the years to position in which they predominantly play, or something like that). The official release this year says that players who received votes in multiple positions are slotted into the position in which they received the most votes (but we've seen them push players pretty much wherever they wanted in previous years).

No. The WNBA doesn’t believe in being transparent.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dawn_Staley_Community_Leadership_Award

I never even heard of this particular award. I've heard of the Kim Perrot Sportsmanship Award, but not this one.

And according to that link, it seems to have stopped after the 2019 season. Any reason why?
