Shepard had double-doubles the first two games and shot over 50%, so I'll assume she just had a cold game today.
That's why it's nice to have lots of scoring options.

Shepard doesn't look very good. OrSU's big aren't that good and she couldn't do shit even against them. That does not bode well. Not sure why Westbeld has been semi benched, but Vaughn is going to be a good 'un for them. |
Westbeld has been gimpy. She wasn't even expected to be ready for the start of the season. I am sure Muffet is watching her minutes closely.

yeah, but look at the level of competition. She just looked slow and clunky to me.

Sure would have liked to see this game. Maybe I can catch a replay somewhere.

It was a lesson in rebounding effort.
In the first quarter OreSt dominated the boards. Some of that was long shots = long rebounds, but most was just more energy and effort.
In the fourth quarter with a tight game on the line, ND outrebounded Ore St 13-5 including grabbing 7-9 potential defensive rebounds.
Scott Rueck cited ND's 2nd half offensive rebounding edge in his post game comments.
I think in retrospect that rebounding tells the tale of this game.

We should always remember to not put to much emphasis on one game. There are too many variables that impact how one team looks against another. Basketball is strange in that way. Players have off shooting games and then sometimes everything they throw up goes in. As in ND case and off day by certain players was mitigated by a great game by Young.
I also believe that Oregon st got away from some of the ball movement that was effective for them earlier when they made too much of an effort to get their center more shots. Nothing wrong with that but then they never went back to the ball movement that got them those early out side shots. While some of that was because ND adjusted defensively to cover their shooters more closely, I still saw quite a few instances when shooters were wide open but were rejected for either working the ball inside or driving to the basket. You always want to balance your attack when ever possible. While Pivic is a good player, I feel she is more of a combo or two guard and not a natural Point. It was usually her that did not take advantage of those open shooters in the second half opting to often force drives where openings did not exist. Or holding the ball to long so open looks via passes didn't have the needed time to work.
The Oregon coach is really good but i think I can see his weakness. He seems to have trouble making in game defensive adjustments. There is not way Young should have dominated from mid range to inside like she did. He tried to adjust by bringing in the Polish center but she is not quick, has bad hands and was constantly stripped. The coach is like many systems coaches in that he stays with something too long. I think the same thing cost them the simi final in the Stockton Regionals last season.
Oh by the way- I do agree with Queenies take that " Dog-piling" should be discouraged in that I find that it is essentially Cr#p and stinks things up where ever it appears.
