I remember at the start of the WPS they were talking about Marta and what that would do for women's football in LA. They even had Kobe Bryant in on the act.

So after all the hype, they are the first team to go. Not the new the league was looking for.

So I guess the dispersion draft will occupy all the news for the next couple of weeks

OMG that is terrible news. Indeed, with stars like Marta I thought LA would be the last to go if the league were to fold. I remain optimistic about the future of WPS, but wow, that sucks.

Hopefully STL gets Marta. Wink

Big, bad news. I hope the speculation that their salary roll and stadium fees were both higher than any other team in the league is correct and the others can keep on plugging at least through the end of the recession.

I don't think Marta will be available via dispersal draft. Isn't Atlanta picking first anyway?
I saw it reported on a local paper that she's making $500k, not sure that is accurate, but that would be a reason her rights are now owned by the league and will be most likely transferred to a team that can afford to pay her. So technically, the rich will get richer.

probably one of the best teams in the league least year and (I think) had the highest average attendance. Not good for the league at all. This basically leaves the FC Gold Pride all alone out west with the remaining 7 teams on the east coast. Hopefully 2011 will see one or two west coasts teams joining in(i.e. Seattle!!).

The Mississippi River and/or Lake Michigan is the "East coast"? Razz

well, when looking at a map, you have the Gold Pride all alone out west and then you have the other 7 teams on the other side of the US. Since St. Louis is the closest team to the Gold Pride isn't really a good thing.
