First, I'm not sure that Steph got fired. It seemed like it was more of CT letting her out of her contract due to the family emergency, whatever it was, and the need to relocate.

I have a feeling that Steph and Lin/Kelly/people in Fever org have always remained in touch and that when they heard about what was going on, light bulbs lit that they could possibly get Steph back and they delayed announcing Sides' firing.

Then it was just a matter of whenever things became clear with Steph being able to come back to Indiana, stuff began to happen. Contracts were settled, signed and the announcements made. So I don't know that I'd call it manipulations as much as I'd call it keeping your cards close, and CT doing the right thing by letting Steph take care of what she needed to take care of personally.

Linn Dunn and Stephanie White have a long and VERY convoluted history with each other.

For a out of left field hiring choice, MaChelle Joseph, she is a good Xs and Os coach but has problems keeping her hands off her players. She is also part of Dunn and White's story.

It's in no way inside info, just the way I made it make sense in my mind.

I did see today that Lisa Salter missed a couple of MNF games, so that makes me think the emergency family situation is either Lisa or one of the boys.

Man! What's going on in Vegas?

They won multiple championships and their assistants are in high demand.

That makes sense, but the timing seems awkward. As someone jokingly mentioned in one of the three threads discussing this hiring, they are trying to avoid the lawsuit. Can't say that didn't cross my mind. But Nakase and Marsh were legit candidates, and opportunities opened up for them. Just hope they both are given a chance to do well.

The flaw in this logic is that leaving Vegas doesn’t shield them from any accusations made for their behavior while they were there. That would be like switching car insurance to avoid a lawsuit for an accident. They were on the staff when the alleged damages occurred, so leaving now doesn’t change that. I also don’t know if there are any accusations at either of them.

Edit. Googled and now see they are partners. Did not know this and wishing her family the best.

Yeah, I understand that - it would be naïve to think that if they were involved, leaving would absolve them of any responsibility. The second lawsuit seemed to pursue the issue more deeply, for as little as I have followed it. I think that was a factor in the recent Natalie Williams fallout.

Katie Smith headed to Ohio State as an Assistant. Going home is a big theme these days.

Claire Duwelius to Unrivaled.

Cheryl has been pretty committed to growing her tree from within. I’m hopeful Brunson has earned a promotion and maybe Janel McCarville could get a shot as an assistant. I always thought that she was such a smart and crafty player.

Cheryl may want full control leading into 2026. Unprecedented times…

A little more info on what happened. Apparently the boys were in school in Indiana and Steph was in CT. Maybe that family emergency was just being with them.

Quote:
According to Powell, the Fever will have to pay White’s salary, which she would have gotten during her final year with the Sun. While the Sun did not publicly reveal the details of the contract, the Indiana-based franchise will also be paying Sides, the salary of the final two years as she had those many years left on her contract. And according to reports, the Fever were paying $500,000 a year. Thus, White’s wish to be with her family, coupled with Fever’s aspirations to win the title, will cost them $1 million at least.

Karl Smesko to the Dream

https://www.espn.com/wnba/story/_/id/42366828/dream-hire-florida-gulf-coast-karl-smesko-head-coach

That's an out-of-left-field choice. I dig it.

For some reason, Smesko could never get a big-time college job despite impressive success at FGCU.

I would love to know the backstory, but coverage of the women's game is still a mile wide and an inch deep.

I would expect him to do well if he can adjust to coaching older players.

The Atlanta Dream managed to do what many other teams have tried over the years. They lured Karl Smesko away from Florida Gulf Coast.

Maybe he just wanted to stay close to home.

Washington, Dallas, Connecticut remain.

The latest trend is successful NCAA coaches with a focus on offense.

I know Utah and FGC aren’t powerhouses but a bit surprised W teams are luring NCAA coaches.

Lynne was making in the ballpark of half a million a season. Presumably she wasn’t switching jobs for a pay cut.

This may be the first indication that college coaches will start looking at the W as a serious alternative.

After all, you have long-term contracts with the players in the pros, which you don't in college, and you can build a franchise -- which you can't necessarily do in a place like Utah. A player you sign and develop could easily decide to head for UConn or USC at any point, and there's nothing you can do.

And of course recruiting is a drag as well, so if the money's there, and apparently enough of it was in this case, maybe college coaches will start making the move.

Karl Smesko wasn't a P4 coach, but Lynne Roberts -- who has done well everywhere -- was. She could be an outlier, of course, but I'm thinking she's the first of many in the coming years.

“My family and I have loved being here in Salt Lake City, our two girls have grown up here, and we are blessed to continue making this our home.” - Lynn Roberts

She was 165-116 at Utah and made the NCAA the last 3 years (one year they could have beaten eventual champion LSU if two foul shots had been made instead of missed with 5 seconds left). She was headed for a lifetime job in a city she says she likes. Now moving to LA in a job that could potentially be over in a year?? Sparks must be paying some really good money. Or maybe she dislikes recruiting high school players. But I'd rather coach college players than pro "grown ass" women.
