I figured I'd start a thread on interesting misc NCAA stats about teams, since I just noticed one about ND while posting on another board.

Not including this year, ND has been to 27 NCAA Tournaments. ND's results actually split exactly into thirds:

Loss in the first two rounds: 9
Loss in the Regionals: 9
ND in the Final Four: 9

That is interesting. I'm curious how you came about to notice this?

The stat I noticed is that in the Alabama – Baylor game, both teams hit more threes than twos. While there are a number of teams that rely heavily on the three pointer, so I suspect more threes than twos happens on a fairly regular basis, I don't Reese call seeing it happen for both teams in a single game. Is it more common than I thought or is this unusual?

On ND Nation, I was talking about the 5/12 matchups that were upsets and then pointed out that ND was 4-1 in 5/12 matchups (the only loss in 1992, ND's first NCAA Tournament bid). Someone asked what was ND records in 3/11 games (likely in jest) and when I started looking up the various matchups,

I decided to just do a rundown of how often ND was each given seed (ND has never been a #6, #8, #10, or #13-16 seed). Then I figured, why not see how ND far ND went as each seed, which then resulted in me curious how many times ND made it to each round of the NCAAs. I then noticed that the number of times ND lost in the first two rounds matched the number of Final Four appearances, which then matched the Regionals.

Thanks, sounds like a logical progression.

The last time that Stanford failed to make the S16 was in 2007.

The last time that Ole Miss made the S16 was in 2007.

*At least that's what ESPN was saying.

Sorry to be that guy, but this current tourney is Notre Dame's 27th, and your premise relies on them making the Final Four in it.

The Stanford-Miss 2007 fact is true though.

Y'all ever heard of Wikipedia?

I got my info from the ND Women's Basketball Media guide. However, Wikipedia agrees with me. It lists 9 Final Fours for ND and (including this year) 28 NCAA Tournament appearances. At least the ND Women's Basketball Wikipedia entry does. If you are going by the "NCAA Tournament History" section of that page that lists 27 appearances, you might want to look at the bottom of the list. It doesn't include 2023.

ND has been in 9 Final Fours:

1997 Lost to Tennessee in the Semifinals
2001 Won the NC
2011 Lost to Texas A&M in the Finals
2012 Lost to Baylor in the Finals
2013 Lost to UConn in the Semis
2014 Lost to UConn in the FInals
2015 Lost to UConn in the FInals
2018 Won the NC
2019 lost to Baylor in the Finals

ND lost in the regionals in:
1998 Lost to Purdue in the Sweet Sixteen
2000 Lost to Texas Tech in the Sweet Sixteen
2003 Lost to Purdue in the Sweet Sixteen
2004 Lost to PSU in the Sweet Sixteen
2008 Lost to Tennessee in the Sweet Sixteen
2010 Lost to Oklahoma in the Sweet Sixteen
2016 Lost to Stanford in the Sweet Sixteen
2017 Lost to Stanford in the Elite Eight
2022 Lost to NC State in the Sweet Sixteen

ND lost in the 1st two rounds in:
1992 First round to UCLA
1994 First round to Minnesota
1996 Second round to Texas Tech
1999 Second round to LSU
2002 Second round to Tennessee
2005 Second round to ASU
2006 First round to BC
2007 Second round to UNC
2009 First round to Minnesota

Someone somewhere else reported that half the number one seeds lost two of their last three games going into the tournament.
I've only checked a few years but I haven't yet found an example of a single team losing two out of three much less two of the one seeds.

(I haven't figured out an easy way to check this, other than manual tedium, but so far, it looks likely to be a rare event.)

The last time two #1 seeds lost the first weekend was 1998, when Stanford lost in round one and Texas Tech lost in round two

Ouch, and to add insult to injury, Texas Tech was hosting the regional.

A parallel to 1998 is good news for South Carolina. A third #1 seed lost in the S16. The last remaining #1 was the undefeated, top ranked, defending national champion who proceeded to romp to an easy title, winning in the F4 by 28 and 18 points.

When was the last time there was only ONE #1 left going into the Sweet 16?

BTW, they keep mentioning that the last time tOSU made the Elite Eight was 1993. In fact, that was the last time they made the Final Four.

In 1993, the Final Four teams were tOSU, Iowa, Texas Tech, and Vanderbilt. It was the first time since the very first NCAA Tournament that no Final Four team had previously made the Final Four. It was also the only time any of these teams made the Final Four. None of them have been there since.
