Chloe looked good , especially for the first game . She has a nice little jumper from 15 feet or so . Longer than that and it's more like a set shot but she looked comfortable shooting it . Rebounded good even though she was on the perimeter a lot . Really runs the floor well . On the fast-break layup , she caught up with Cooper who made a nice pass to her for the layup while the rest of the gamecocks seemed to be spectating .

Of course , it's a little easier to make shots when you have a big lead . We'll have to see how much Dawn trusts her next time we have a close game .

It's nicely motivational to see Staley give HS transfer Kitts 23 minutes in her first eligible game, although I don't know how motivational it is to the Roman legion of HS AA guards already on, and incoming to, SCar's team this and next season.

Compare this, for example, to 6-2 G/F Saylor Poffenbarger's 32 total minutes in about 22 games after her HS transfer to UConn in January 2021. She transferred out 11 months later in November 2021 with four years of D1 eligibility remaining.

Poffenbarger is now starting on the SEC's undefeated Arkansas, is leading the team in MPG and RBG, third in APG, fifth in PPG, and has had three double-doubles so far in the season. If UConn have developed her more initially, which may have been hampered by a back injury, or somehow showed more confidence in her, Poffenbarger may have been a good contributor to UConn during this season's injury-fest.

It wasn't much of a sacrifice or risk for Staley. It was against Charleston Southern and the score was 59-11 after 3 Q.

She gets more meaningful minutes in any daily practice scrimmage.

Another "as expected" blow-out for the Gamecocks (12-0) today, over Coastal Carolina (5-6), as they won 102-39. The entire South Carolina roster got ample playing minutes: the only Gamecock that played 20+ minutes was Ashlyn Watkins' 21 minutes, and she's a reserve.

Watkins responded by leading the Gamecocks with 16 pts on 7-12 shooting, with 7 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 blocks, and 2 steals. Starter Zia Cooke added 14 pts on 5-9 shooting, with 5 assists. Reserve Sania Feagin added 13 pts on 6-8 shooting, with 7 rebounds and 3 blocks.

Starter Aliyah Boston chipped in 11 pts in 13 minutes on 4-6 shooting, with 10 rebounds and 3 blocks. Laeticia Amihere also scored 11 pts in 15 minutes on 5-6 shooting, with 4 rebounds, 3 blocks, and 3 steals.

Early-enrolled freshman Chloe Kitts came down from her debut high a bit, scoring only 2 pts in 15 minutes on 1-3 shooting. She added 3 rebounds and 1 assist. The typical big question mark for freshmen at any level, for any sport, is consistency, and Chloe is no doubt going to have that to battle with herself.

Overall the team shot 57% for the game, out-rebounded the Chanticleers 64-25, and added 23 assists, 16 blocks, and 11 steals. The bench out-scored Coastal's reserves 62-6.

The Gamecocks have now a full week to rest up, enjoy Christmas, and prepare for the conference schedule starting up: they next face Texas A&M Thursday next week....

In the last 8 games since the Stanford game, the South Carolina BENCH has out-scored all challengers 44.0 to 42.1 ppg. This is a huge improvement over last season's team, in my opinion.....

And how did they do in the 8 games after last year's Stanford game?

It wasn't quite the same scenario, as this season both teams played each other earlier in the non-conference season, while last season the Stanford game was the final OOC game before the SEC schedule began. So the next 8 games were all SEC opponents, while none of these last 8 games this season were.

But for comparison sake, the next 8 games after the Stanford game in 2021-22, the Gamecocks went 7-1 in, and the Gamecock bench averaged 19.1 ppg to the opponents averaging 7.0 from their bench. This included the LSU game where the Tiger reserves outscored the Gamecock reserves 2 to 1. That's not to mean twice the points that we scored, it was literally 2 points to our 1 point.

Of those same 8 games, the Gamecocks out-scored those SEC opponents overall 71.1 ppg to 52.4 ppg.

Just to get some additional perspective, I compared the 8 non-conference games played BEFORE the Stanford game in 21-22, since typically there can be substantial disparities between non-conference games from conference games. Of those 8 games - which the Gamecocks went 8-0 - the Gamecock bench out-scored their opponents' reserves 23.1 to 14.1 ppg. So the opponents - which included ranked opponents (at the time) Oregon, Connecticut, and Maryland - doubled what the SEC opponents did from the bench, but the Gamecocks reserves also contributed more, if only slightly, and still out-produced their opposing counterparts.

But we're STILL comparing two different seasons, with different caliber of opponents, in different stages of each season schedule in regards to conference play. One comparison to make between both seasons, is to compare the actual games with Stanford. In both seasons, both teams were the top 2 ranked WBB teams when they took to the hardwood. The first game was a 4-pt. win 65-61 in regulation, the 2nd a 5-pt win in overtime 76-71. Both teams returned the vast majority of their rosters from the first game.

In 2021-22, Stanford's bench out-scored the Gamecocks reserves 18-13. This season, the Gamecocks out-scored the Cardinal 34-9 from the pine. In 21-23 for the entire 37 game season, the South Carolina bench accounted for an average of 21.1 ppg, or 29.8% of the total 70.9 ppg the team averaged for the season.

Thus far through 12 games - all non-conference games - the Gamecock reserves have averaged an even 41.0 ppg of the team's total 83.2 ppg, or 49.3% of the team's total offensive output.

With the conference slate starting up, it's IS possible that the bench production may shut down to more than half of what it was averaging during the non-conference slate: in order to do NO MORE than equal the 21-22 per-game average by the end of this season's regular season, the bench will have to drop down to only averaging 7.1 ppg for the balance of 16 SEC games plus the CT game yet to be played, and I seriously doubt (and greatly hope not) that that can happen. But we'll see.....

Gamecocks improve to 13-0 by winning their SEC season opener versus Texas A&M 76-34. The Aggies came into Colonial Life Arena 5-5 on the season, hobbled by injuries and often only having 6-7 players available for games. They would play 8 players tonight, and really wasn't able to mount much of any resistance. South Carolina only missed sophomore reserve Bree Hall, who was kept out of the game with a leg contusion, as a precautionary measure.

The biggest news of the game tonight was freshman Talaysia Cooper leading the team with a career-high 15 pts on 6-9 shooting in 20 minutes, along with 5 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1 steal. Zia Cooke added 14 pts on 5-10 shooting, 3-7 from the 3-pt line, in 23 minutes. Sania Feagin chipped in 11 pts on 5-7 shooting in 18 minutes, with 6 rebounds and 2 blocks.

Overall the Gamecocks totaled 53 rebounds, 13 steals, and 9 blocked shots. They shot 44% but could have done better in this area, with a number of missed easy layups - although they did shoot 6-18 (.333) from behind the 3-pt arc, which is about as good as they can be expected to do on average this season. They also shot poorly from the free-throw line 16-29 (.552), which explains why they only scored 76 and not scored more.

But its the ice-breaker, and the first game in a week after the holidays. The Gamecocks will play again Monday at Georgia in Athens.....

The Gamecocks win in a route of the Auburn Tigers 94-42 to improve to 15-0 and 3-0 in SEC play. South Carolina shot 36-57 (63.2%) from the field, and 7-16 (43.8%) from the 3-pt. line. Also shot 15-18 (83.3%) from the FT line as well. They finished with 25 assists, to 14 turnovers, and out-rebounded Auburn 45-25. Also had 9 blocks and 6 steals. The bench out-scored Auburn's bench 47-13.

Cardoso led the team off the bench with 16 pts on 6-7 shooting, with 5 boards. Boston fell just short of a double-double, with 13 pts on 5-7 shooting, with 9 rebounds, 4 blocks, and 3 assists. Saxton added 12 pts on 5-7 shooting, with 5 rebounds. Cooke followed up on her 31-pt. effort in the last game versus Georgia, with 10 pts on 4-8 shooting.

Fletcher and Johnson combined at the PG spot to add in 9 pts on 4-8 shooting, with 12 assists against just one turnover, plus 8 rebounds, 4 steals and 2 blocks......

The Gamecocks are now 3-0 in SEC play, having out-scored those 3 conference opponents 239-127, for a 79.7-42.3 ppg average. They are shooting .506 from the field, .392 from the 3-pt. line, and .686 from the FT line.

South Carolina has now been ranked #1 currently for 28 straight weeks in the Associated Press Poll, which is 5th longest in the history of that poll. They have been ranked #1 for a total of 53 times by the AP Poll, which rates for 4th most by a program in the history of that poll (It's a given that the top 2 are Connecticut and Tennessee. I suppose the #3 program would be Stanford?).

They have been ranked in every AP Poll since December 10, 2012, including a top 10 position every week since the start of the 2019-20 season. Since the start of that 2019-20 season, the Gamecocks have been ranked #1 in the AP Poll a total of 41 times, more than 3 times more than any other team in WCBB in that time....

The Gamecocks squeaked out a ugly, closely contested win at Mississippi State today 58-51 to improve to 16-0, 4-0 on the season.

It was an unusual ordeal for the Gamecocks to find ways to put the ball into the basket today. Overall, they shot 20-66 (30.3%) from the field, 4-18 (22.2%) from the 3-pt. line, and 14-24 (58.3%) from the free throw line. Mississippi State (12-5, 1-3) is a strong defensive team playing on their home floor: just out of the top 10 at 11th in Scoring Defense, 4th in FG % Defense, 7th in 3-pt. FG % Defense. The Gamecocks were held to their lowest offensive output thus far this season, besting the 62 pts they scored in a road win over North Dakota State earlier. Their shooting efficiency was also their lowest on the season thus far, also beating the 34.3% they shot at North Dakota State.

They will be the toughest opponent South Carolina will face this regular season defensively, in terms of stat rankings, minus LSU.

Still, the Gamecocks had a lot of open looks that they failed to convert on. It seems like every season over the past 3-5 seasons there are at least 2-3 games during the season where the team just comes out especially flat and off-kilter offensively: it can happen against poor teams where they still pull out a win, but an ugly win that shows they need to return to the practice court classroom, but occasionally it can happen against good teams in bad situations for the Gamecocks, that results in a loss or two.

The SEC opener at Missouri last season was a good example - the losses to Texas A&M in 20-21 and UK last season were NOT such examples, as both teams at the time were upperclass-laden with top players that just out-played the Gamecocks. The 20-21 loss to NC State was IMO a good example - the Wolfpack was a very good team, but again the Gamecocks just could not hit baskets that they had good looks at, particularly Boston and Henderson.

Today was another occasion, but we still pulled out the ugly win on a strong defensive opponent's home court, for another conference win. Hopefully we don't have too many of these ugly outcomes the rest of the way......

You know everyone comes out to play SC just loaded for bear, even teams that are normally not so great. The Bulldogs had just lost to the Lady Vols and were probably smarting a little.....

Another SEC road game that started out ugly for the Gamecocks, that turned into a straight route win, as the Gamecocks beat Kentucky 95-66 to improve to 17-0, 5-0.

Kentucky (8-9, 0-5) came into the game outside of the top 100 in most all offensive or defensive categories. But this is a SEC rivalry series for both teams: Kentucky and South Carolina play each other twice every year, moreso than against other SEC teams (perhaps Georgia too), and it has been a heated rivalry going back to the Matthew Mitchell days - even before Mississippi State and Missouri rose up to get the Gamecocks' ire.

But the Wildcats opened up very strong and aggressive on both ends of the court: the Gamecocks opened at a torrid pace, shooting for 64% from the field, but the Wildcats stayed close, only behind by 3 points 20-17 at the end of the 1st Period.

They would stay on the Gamecocks' heels through the next 2 periods - the Gamecocks out-scored the Wildcats in each quarter, but only by meager margins - 17-16 in the 2nd, and 22-18 in the 3rd. There were large scoring runs for both teams: after a short jumper from Cardoso extended the Gamecocks lead to 7 20-13 late in the 1st Period, the Wildcats went on a 16-0 run to take the lead 29-20 at the 7-minute mark of the 2nd Period.

The Kentucky lead grew to 10 pts 31-21 with 5 minutes to play in the 1st half, until the Gamecocks responded with a 16-0 run of their own, to reclaim the lead 37-31 with mere seconds left in the half. UK would score in the final second and the Gamecocks led in a tight battle 37-33 at the halftime.

The Gamecocks shot 57% in the 1st half, so they certainly were shooting better than in their previous game at Mississippi State. But the Wildcats were relentless, and continued to attack behind the scoring of Maddie Scherr and Jada Walker, who had 28 of Kentucky's 33 1st half points on 12-19 shooting. The Gamecocks likewise got the majority of their scoring before half from Boston and Cooke, who combined to shoot 12-18 themselves for 28 of their team's 37 total pts. But the 1st half was very contentious, and while the Gamecocks lead the league in rebounds per game, and the Wildcats are nowhere close to doing so, rebounds were tied at the half, 16-16, and 2nd chance points also tied at 8-8.

In the 2nd half, the Gamecocks turned up the offensive heat: in the 3rd Period, they shot 60% 6-10 from the field, while holding the Wildcats to 38.1% shooting. But they only out-scored Kentucky 22-18, due to the Wildcats getting that 38.1% shooting by shooting 8-21, more than doubling the Gamecocks' shot attempts for the quarter. The Gamecocks had 4 turnovers in the period that hamstrung their offensive output. The Wildcats meanwhile were called for fouls that sent the Gamecocks to the free throw line 10 times, of which they converted on 9 of them.

In the 4th Period, the game was blown open, disguising just how fiercely competitive it was. The Gamecocks out-scored the Wildcats 36-15 in the final stanza, shooting 13-17 (76.5%) and 10-13 (76.9%) from the charity stripe, as Kentucky continued to foul to try to slow down the Gamecock scoring. Overall in the 2nd half, South Carolina out-scored Kentucky 58-33, shooting 19-27 (70.4%) from the field, and 19-23 (82.6%) from the line.

Boston led the Gamecocks with 21 pts on 9-11 shooting, with 11 rebounds, 4 blocks, and 3 assists. Cooke added 20 pts on 8-14 shooting, with 3 assists and 2 rebounds. Cardoso added in 12 pts on 5-8 shooting, with 4 rebounds, and Amihere chipped in 11 pts on 3-7 shooting, with 3 rebounds and 2 blocks.

Red-shirt Freshman PG Raven Johnson continues to show strong improvement in her game, coming off the bench to add 9 pts on 4-4 shooting, with a team-leading 7 assists and 3 steals....

South Carolina improved their record to 18-0, 6-0 with their 81-50 win over Missouri (14-5, 3-3). With the win, the Gamecocks extend their nation-leading win streak to 24 games, just 2 wins shy of their program record 26 wins established in 2019-20. The home court win was also their 36th straight in Colonial Life Arena.

Aliyah Boston scored 20 pts in 21 minutes on 6-9 shooting, and 8-8 from the FT line. She added 10 rebounds and 2 blocks. Zia Cooke added 16 pts on 5-14 shooting. Cooke was 5-10 at one point before missing her last 4 shot attempts. Ashlyn Watkins contributed 13 pts on 4-5 shooting, with 6 boards in 26 minutes, her most minutes in a game thus far in her young career.

Tonight's game was perhaps the first turning point where we see the transition at PG from Kierra Fletcher to Raven Johnson. Fletcher started again at the position as she has done for 15 of the previous 17 games, but Johnson ended up playing 19 minutes to Fletcher's 16. Johnson scored 6 pts on 2-4 shooting - 2-3 from behind the 3-pt. arc - with 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals.

Combined, both Johnson and Fletcher contributed 8 pts on 3-8 shooting, with 10 rebounds and 7 assists to just 1 turnover. The PG position is really settling in now, with Johnson leading the way and getting back her offensive prowess she showed as an elite prospect. In SEC play (6 games) Johnson is shooting .458 from the field, and .364 from behind the 3-pt. arc. She's averaging 4.3 ppg, 3.8 apg, 3.2 rpg, and 2.0 spg in about 17 mpg....

The Gamecocks improved to 19-0 and 7-0 in SEC play with a dominant 96-48 win over out-manned Vanderbilt (9-11, 0-6) at Memorial Gymnasium in Nashville Thursday night. The win is the Gamecocks' 25th straight, one win away from their program record set during the 2019-20 season that got cut short by the Covid19 pandemic.

Boston led the way with 16 pts in 22 minutes on 8-8 shooting, with 10 rebounds and 3 blocks. The double-double was Boston's 72nd at South Carolina, tying her for the program all-time record with Sheila Foster.

Cooke led the scoring for the Gamecocks with 17 pts in 21 minutes, shooting 6-12 from the field. Cardoso added a double-double of her own with 10 pts in 19 minutes shooting 4-10, with 15 rebounds, 1 block and 1 steal.

Amihere added 9 pts on 1-3 shooting - 7-10 at the free-throw line - with 3 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 blocks, and 2 steals. Brea Beal also scored 9 pts in 19 minutes on 3-4 shooting, with 2 blocks.

Vanderbilt has been dealing with injuries and player dismissals this season, and only dressed out 8 players for the game. They were out-rebounded 49-23 and despite taking only 3 shots fewer than the Gamecocks, they converted only 30% of them compared to the Gamecocks converting on 62% of theirs. The Gamecocks shot 54% for the 1st half, then turned up the offense after halftime shooting a red-hot 67% after intermission....

South Carolina improved to 20-0 overall and 8-0 in SEC play with their 92-46 defeat of Arkansas (17-5, 4-3) today. The scoring MOV was a bit surprising to me, as I felt Arkansas was a strong offensive team that would stay with the Gamecocks offensively to a degree. But the game was a rout from the beginning, as the Gamecocks jumped out to a 25-17 lead after the 1st Period. It was best quarter of basketball the Razorbacks would play for the game.

Aliyah Boston set a all-time career record with her 13 pts on 5-11 shooting, with 14 rebounds and 3 assists. The double-double was her 73rd career effort, passing Sheila Foster for the most career dbl-dbls in the program's history.

She wasn't the only one with a double-double: Kamilla Cardoso also chipped in one with 12 pts on 3-8 shooting (6-8 from the FT line) and 16 rebounds with 3 blocks.

Zia Cooke led the team with another strong scoring effort, with 24 pts on 8-11 shooting, 4-5 from the 3-pt. line, with 3 assists, in 24 minutes. She was well on her way to threatening her career high of 31 pts she scored earlier this season against Florida, but didn't play the 4th Period.

An amazing stat for the game was total rebounds, with the Gamecocks totally dominating here 74-17! Their bench out-scored the Razorback's 38-7, and they out-scored Arkansas 40-22 in the paint, and 37-0 on 2nd-chance points.

Arkansas had just played a tough, tightly contested game at LSU that they lost 79-76 on Thursday night, before traveling to Columbia, SC to take on the Gamecocks, and I feel the competition may have worn them down a bit, which may help explain the blow-out win by the Gamecocks today.....
