A disappointing number for a championship clinching game. However, the competition with NFL has been noted. Overall, the league has some great numbers when taken at face value. Late season and playoff attendance were also very strong. Next year's numbers will be very telling as Bird's retirement had a clear impact on ratings for games that features Seattle.
I'd love to see the league make some adjustments off this year's performance. Ensure the finals are finished prior to the NFL season. Push for a prime time ABC game, even if it is the All Star game. I'd love to see what numbers a prime time ABC game could pull in.

Is the fact that Connecticut is a smaller TV market (than, say Phoenix or Seattle or Chicago) a factor in the slight dip too?

Maybe. I think they sometimes release the breakdown of top 5 metro markets for viewers. The W is in so few markets that I don't know if the teams on the finals impact viewership on the same way that it does the NFL, NBA, etc.

Ouch, poor Connecticut. I mean Hartford-New Haven is the second smallest media market in the league, but the honor for the smallest goes to Las Vegas. I find it unlikely that markets had too much of a negative effect compared to say the actual star level of players involved, but also ratings were quite good early in the series only to crater for the last game. |
