1989-1990 Aliquippa Girls' basketball team named to 2022 WPIAL Hall of Fame class

The WPIAL announced a 16-member Hall of Fame Class of 2022 on Wednesday afternoon, which included the 1989-1990 Aliquippa Girls' basketball team.

Over three decades after dominating on the court, one of Beaver County's best basketball dynasties is being recognized for its accomplishments.

On Wednesday afternoon, the WPIAL announced a 16-member Hall of Fame Class for 2022, which included the 1989-1990 Aliquippa High School girls basketball team. Led by head coach Donna Richey — who was enshrined in the WPIAL Hall of Fame in 2013 — the Quips went on to win four consecutive WPIAL Class 2A titles and two straight PIAA championships.

A force from start to finish, the Quips were especially good in the state playoffs, defeating four of their five PIAA postseason opponents by 20 or more points, including a 89-62 win over Trinity in the state final.

Loaded with talent from top to bottom, Aliquippa was headlined by star seniors Carrie Bordas and Mona Gaffney-Brosier. Bordas, who'd go on to play at St. Bonaventure, ended her high school career as the WPIAL's all-time leading scorer, tallying 2,658 points. Gaffney-Brosier meanwhile, ended her high school career with 2,038 points and 1,246 rebounds before going on to play at Clairion.

The 1989-1990 Quips will be the sixth team from Beaver County to be enshrined in the WPIAL Hall of Fame, joining the 1967 Ambridge boys basketball team (2008), the 1965 Midland boys basketball team (2009), the 1960 Beaver Falls football team (2014), the 1992 Blackhawk boys basketball team (2016) and the 1998 Rochester football team (2019).

Since enshrining its first class in 2007, the WPIAL has honored just two other girls basketball teams before selecting the Quips this year — the 1983 Mt. Alvernia (2013) and 1990 Penn Hills (2015) teams.

The 2011 Mars girls soccer team will join the Quips in this year's class, where they'll become just the fifth and six girls teams overall to be enshrined in the WPIAL Hall of Fame.

The annual WPIAL Hall of Fame induction banquet will be held on Friday, May 27 at the DoubleTree Hotel in Greentree (500 Mansfield Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15205).
