... will be held in Sydney. Just announced by FIBA.

MIES (Switzerland) - FIBA has awarded the hosting rights for the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2022 to Basketball Australia.
Basketball Australia and the Russian Basketball Federation were the two finalists bidding to host FIBA's women’s flagship event two years from now.
The decision was taken by FIBA's Central Board today, which took place via video conference, having both candidates submit their bids and then each give presentations to the Central Board.
This will be the second time that Basketball Australia will host FIBA's Women's Basketball World Cup, having done so in 1994.
Hamane Niang, President of FIBA, said: "The Central Board saw two excellent presentations today from two basketball strong National Federations. I would like to congratulate them on their outstanding work and the effort and commitment which has gone into their bids. There can only be one host country for this event, and for 2022 it will be Australia.
"We look forward to the biggest women’s event in basketball taking place in Sydney, and also the 12-month qualification period that will take place to be among the 12 teams playing in Australia."
Andreas Zagklis, FIBA Secretary General, said: "I would like to congratulate Basketball Australia on their successful bid. Australia really is a powerhouse in basketball, with the women coming in second at the previous FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup in 2018.
"This is a tremendous opportunity for the city of Sydney to both promote and take women’s basketball to the next level. We witnessed many successes at the last World Cup, and I am sure that in 2022 we will see even more. We are looking forward to a fruitful cooperation over the next two years in planning for this pinnacle event."
The iconic Australian city of Sydney will host the event over 10 days in September and October 2022. The tournament will be played across two venues, both of which are located in Sydney Olympic Park. The sport-loving nation of Australia will get to witness firsthand 144 of the best players in the world, from 12 international teams in 38 games. |

I'm still amazed the USA has never hosted this tournament.

You folks okay down there from the Quake earlier on Wednesday. I know it was in Victoria, but felt in NSW and as far as Tazmania.

Between their lengthy lockdown, violent protests, Perth stealing their footy grand final, and now the earthquake it is a very rough week for Melburnians!
Was only a 5.9 thankfully, so not much damage.

So next years Worlds are right after the WNBA season?
How will that impact International players?
Aussies and Canadians shop up, French, Spanish and Belgians if they make it stay home? Or leave early?

Dates for the Worlds per wikipedia: 22 September – 1 October
So we will see how the WNBA does their schedule next year.
I believe Spain failed to qualify for the Worlds

The actual qualifying tournaments aren't until February, but yeah, Spain failed to qualify for those. Top two at the AfroBasket going on right now and top-4 from the AsiaCup that's immediately after it make up the rest of the teams in the qualifying tournaments. |

The four hosts will be determined before they decide on all the draw details. Nigeria and Mali will likely be drawn into the same group so that at least one African team qualifies. |

The United States (planned for Washington D.C.), Japan, and Serbia (two tournaments) are scheduled to host in February. |

Hardly the first time that Cambage has confused me, but I don't really understand why she appears to be angry about what seems to be a reasonable email. If you're angry about other stuff from the past, fair enough, but I'm not seeing much wrong with them asking whether she'd fully commit to the 2022 squad.
Ah well, Liz being Liz. |

It's an unusual situation with the tournament that the United States is hosting as the vaccine in use in Russia is not on the list for entry approval. Russia will play against Belgium and Puerto Rico in the Dominican Republic and they will not play the United States. Belgium and Puerto Rico play each other and the United States in Washington before traveling to Santo Domingo. This definitely is not the most elegant solution even starting with this dumb format.
Since I linked up Brazil's roster, here are other announcements for preliminary rosters:
France:

China:

Japan:
Also in recent news, Canada appointed Fenerbahce's Victor Lapena as head coach with Noelle Quinn as lead assistant so they will not be rooting for Seattle during the WNBA season. They were reportedly in talks with other WNBA head coaches and Europeans with national team experience so we will see how this goes. They supposedly did contact current college players too, but it seems like any that accept would make it hard on their college teams. |

When can we expect to hear about tix for DC? Need to get those hotels & flights nailed down asap. Think they’ll play at the current venue or go back to the Phone Booth? Thanks.

Not supposed to be the Phone Booth:

Not sure what later date that they think would be appropriate to start selling tickets. Now that Meesseman is complaining about the situation, I wonder if USA Basketball refused to relinquish hosting. It would be interesting to know if they actually expect to profit from hosting. |

Even for a tournament hosted by the combined might of Washington DC and FIBA, it boggles my mind that you still can't buy tickets for an event that's in three weeks and been set for months. Maybe they were anticipating fans not being allowed into indoor events so didn't want to sell tickets that might then have to be refunded? Pretty sure I had flights, accommodation and tickets booked by now for the equivalent event in Belgrade two years ago.
Weirdly, I notice that despite going back to Belgrade for two qulalifying groups again this time around, they're using a different sports hall. According to Wikipedia this one is slightly smaller, and yet still holds nearly double the 'Entertainment and Sports Arena' in DC. |
