TEAM USA WOMEN’S 4X400 SPLITS:

Sydney McLaughlin 50.21
Allyson Felix 49.38
Dalilah Muhammad 48.94
Athing Mu 48.32

The first runner always runs the longest distance because of the length of the baton passing zone.

It wouldn't have mattered what order they ran in, given the outcome.

It was obvious that Mu wouldn't start, since she hasn't come out starting blocks all season.

Felix has run in second place in many past relays.

I thought McLaughlin potentially had both the fastest start and strongest finish. Not many commentators picked up on this, but Muhammad came over all 10 hurdles faster than McLaughlin, who won by virtue of her tremendous burst of speed and stamina over the last 30 meters. So, I figured McLaughlin would either start or run anchor.

The unknown 400 speed to me was Mu, who hasn't run the 400 recently, but the coaches must have correctly known she had as much anchor speed as anyone.

What a future young McLaughlin and Mu have.

Wasn't counting on a win in marathon, anyway. We need to win volleyball, and at least split the boxing matches... I think our best bet is at super-heavyweight; I don't see us beating Cuba, at lightweight.

I tend to agree. Cruz has beaten Davis three times already. OTOH the first Jalolov - Torrez fight ended like this...

I've enjoyed the ads for the paralympic athletes. Some of them are really amazing.

Not sure what you're getting at with this narrative; Mu broke the collegiate 400m record this spring.

I'm not even going to pretend that I understand how the omnium is scored, but according to the announcers Jennifer Valente is in contention

Yes, she did, among many other college records.

I simply meant she was unlikely to start in the relay because the other three runners have much more experience coming out of blocks, given that all three have done that in probably all their professional career races. Mu, on the other hand, split her high school and college seasons between the 400 and no-blocks 800 and even 1500. By "season", I was referring to the summer professional track season. Mu turned professional after the NCAA championships and announced that she was forgoing the 400 to concentrate on the 800 for the Olympics.

As it turned out, it really wouldn't have mattered who started or in what order they ran. Mu has potential get close to the world record in the 800 and maybe even Koch's record in the 400.

Quiz: What four women hold the world record in the 4x400 relay? Bet no one can name any.

Tatyana Ledovskaya 50.12
Olga Nazarova II 47.82
Mariya Pinigina 49.43
Olga Bryzgina 47.80

The Soviet Union team of the 1988 Olympics set the world record of 3:15.17. Bryzgina outran FloJo on the anchor leg, leaving the 1988 USA team in second place (still) for the world record. It was a high time for all.

China will not win gold in rhythmic gymnastics: they're currently in third, after finishing their final rotation, with three participants to go. All three participants finished ahead of them, in the first rotation.

It was always a longshot for them. The Russians usually dominate followed by other Eastern Europeans.

China did not medal in rhythmic gymnastics

I'm going to have to catch the volleyball final on DVR: USA has never won gold, and hasn't beaten Brazil, since Barcelona. I'm not staying up for that.

This exact USA team beat Brazil a few weeks ago at another international competition. USA just took the first set!

That was unexpected. Not that they won--well a little that they won--but that it was a straight up asskicking.

South Bend station took the 30 minute news break. Annie Drews went to Penn High School which is in Mishawaka, IN. Hickory Road divides South Bend from Mishawaka. Shocked

[Stugotz] If you don't do it in the Olympics, it doesn't count. [/Stugotz[

I mean, I'm happy to be wrong, but I don't think I need to walk back what I said, or sit here and act like I was wildin', when they'd literally never done it, before last night.
