I think there is a difference between an athlete like Al Oerter who competes individually and mskes the team competing head to head with other athletes and those who are go as part of a team. All the individaul events are picked because they finished in the top three, not because they have been there before and are veterants.

The fact that you used an individual event as a comparison shows you lack reason and are just looking for some justificaton.
