Realistically, if Taurasi were to average 15 PPG for the rest of her career, starting now, it would take her about 66 games to get to 10k. And realistically, she'd get there by the end of the 2023 season, as one would likely have to account for her missing a few games (due to rest, injury, dental work, what have you) between now & then.

Otherwise, if Taurasi can't get to 10k, who would be the next best candidate to be the first one to get there? Or just a candidate to get there in general? Tina Charles has been pretty durable, and given how she's been playing, I think she could certainly last another 6 seasons or so after this one. (Charles currently is at 6,338 points after about 10.5 seasons of work thus far, and could get there in her next approx. 199 games if she maintains her 18.4 PPG average for the rest of her career.)

Eventually, way down the line, I can see A'ja Wilson and/or Arike Ogunbowale getting there as well. Durability will be the name of the game, though.

Still hope Taurasi's the first to 10k, though, given her widely-recognized GOAT status. It would be a fabulous achievement for Charles to be the first nonetheless, but it just wouldn't have that same pop like it would with DT3.

I would say it is not so much durability, but longevity. Taurasi is still playing at an elite level - and as an elite scorer - at 40. Players like Augustus, Moore, Pondexter, etc., might have seemed like they could do it early in their careers, but none played at that level long enough.

Imo durability leads to longevity. It seems to me that players in general will just choose to keep playing so long as their body allows for it, and if their body allows for it, then they can usually keep up playing at a high or at least a pretty good level. Obviously some players will retire while at the top of their game (or at least not on the downturn), but in this case, if 10k points is a feat that a player wouldn't mind achieving while they're still feeling good & playing well, and they were somewhat close to achieving it (closer than most, anyway), they probably would just go for it.

I think that makes sense. We're basically saying the same thing, I think Smile

At 20 points per game (slightly above her career average) it would take her about a season and a half - 50 games, so we could see it at the end of next season.

And are you counting on her to do something at 39 that she's only done once, since she was 31?

She's not really slowing down much. She took 57 games to go from 6000 to 7000, 58 games from 7000 to 8000, and 55 games from 8000 to 9000.

Counterpoint: it took Taurasi four seasons to get those most recent 55 games. At that pace, we're asking her to play until she's at least 43. And that's still presuming that she doesn't slow down, at all.

4th fastest. I’m not gonna cheat, one of them is very easy thanks to your clues; Fowles, I’m gonna guess Leslie and Catchings.

I doubt Catchings. She was a very strong rebounder, but never rebounded like a dominant center. She spent a lot of her time on the wing.

Tina Charles instead?

My other guess was going to be Cheryl Ford, but I guess she didn't keep it up for long enough?

Jonquel Jones, the 128th player in WNBA history to score 2000 points! Spider is 27 years, 224 days old. She is the 46th youngest to score 2000. She took 153 games to score 2000, tied with Crystal Langhorne for 40th fastest ever. She is the 3rd player from the class of 2016 to score 2000!

NOTE: Jones and Langhorne were also tied for speed to 1000 points at 94 games. This is the first time two players tied at 1000 were also tied at 2000.

A'ja Wilson, the 129th player in WNBA history to score 2000 points! Dime Dancer is 25 years, 9 days old. She is the 7th youngest to score 2000. She took 104 games to score 2000, tied with Cappie Pondexter and Diana Taurasi for 5th fastest ever. She is the 1st player from the class of 2018 to score 2000!

She would be the youngest to 3000 if she got there by 5 September 2021. She would be the fastest to 3000 if she got there in her next 44 games.
