Alba Torrens and Tamara Abalde returned positive virus tests so we will see what Spain's options are.

Games will be on ESPN+ in the United States.

Spain's preliminary list:

I heard that Laura Nicholls announced her retirement, but I thought it might not take effect until after this summer. She's not that useful, but for whatever reason, Griner does not really like to play against her.

I was hoping that Ángela Salvadores would develop into a contender for Spain's national team. She played with all the youth categories of the Spanish women's national team.

But I have not heard much about her since she transferred from Duke after her freshman year.

She's finally somewhere in the picture as Spain put some players in quarantine in case they need to make a last-minute replacement:

Can we talk about the fact that Laia Palau is a year older than Sue Bird and is still Spain's starting point guard?

So, does that mean Stokes is on her way back to the US?

I'll answer my own question. Kiah's Instagram story indicates that she will be arriving in NY tonight.

Are there any provisions for squad changes after the start of the tournament? I know normally you'd be locked in to that 12, but obviously a lot of competitions have adapted their rules and regulations due to Covid-19.

There do not appear to be. A few teams brought 14 players with them to final testing to allow for swaps before the roster deadline. I am not sure if FIBA only allowed for 2 alternates or if nobody wanted to spend to bring even more players.

The two teams with late virus uncertainty both get upset on the first day...

France should be considered the heavy favorite.

The good thing about Spain being upset yesterday is that they might end up flipping themselves to the opposite side of the bracket by not winning the group. Which would make a Spain-France final possible. If they'd both won their groups and progressed as expected they'd have met in the semis.

There are plenty of teams in this tournament that can all beat each other on any given day, but that still seems the most likely ultimate outcome.

Day 2 in the books:
http://www.womensbasketball247.com/2021/06/2021-eurobasket-day-2-june-18th/

I am enjoying Azania Stewart's commentary, although I think that she might owe Chris Kamara royalties every time she says "unbelievable, Jeff". She only gets three more days of games with him though so she might be able to afford that. Meanwhile in San Juan, Despina Barton and Natalia Melendez are swinging between brilliant and making me wonder what is going on over there.

I feel like it might be a rather short list of people around here who'll get that reference Laughing .

Yesterday's games:
http://www.womensbasketball247.com/2021/06/2021-eurobasket-playoff-games-june-21st/

Belarus or a depleted Sweden will have a spot in world qualifying. The loser will most likely face Bosnia and Herzegovina, which was strong in qualifying, but still untested, for another spot. Meanwhile, Russia has to worry about possibly missing out again with France benefiting from strong teams getting put on the other side of the bracket.

Quarterfinals:
http://www.womensbasketball247.com/2021/06/2021-eurobasket-quarterfinals-june-23rd/

Russia has to beat Spain's homecooking to return to the global stage...

One would think that Bosnia and Herzegovina can beat Sweden even without Gajic, but Jonquel Jones may have to put on her cape one more time.

I didnt hear what happened to Gajic to miss the game. She was averaging a double double so far. She missed a lot of time with Avenida, due to a leg or calf injury. I hope it didnt get reinjured.

awhom111, any idea what they'd do if Spain won the gold in Tokyo? Because the winners there are meant to play in the qualifying groups and automatically qualify for Worlds anyway - but the quotas from continental tournaments don't consider the possibility of someone winning in Tokyo while not being the top-whatever in their continent to reach the qualifiers. Would someone have to drop out? Do they get to skip the qualifiers?

Semifinals:
http://www.womensbasketball247.com/2021/06/2021-eurobasket-semifinals-june-26th/

Bosnia qualifies even without Gajic, who they kept the cone of silence around. I am not counting out Serbia even with France as favorites.

They would knock Russia out of the qualifiers. Now that we know, I am rooting for it to happen. I suppose that if they had thought about it earlier, they could have arranged a 5th place game just in case instead of presumably relying on tiebreakers.
