Wow... 1Q ended 22-13 Gonzaga, but now Belmont on an 11-0 run forcing a Gonzaga timeout. Belmont leads 24-22.

Bellmont is continuing to build on their lead, up by 6 midway into the 3Q.

Charge called on Gonzaga when the defender was both moving AND in the restricted area still. HOW does this happen??? The rule is so black and white, it's really inexcusable to miss a call like that in such a close game.

Belmost leads 47-44 with 1:00 to go in the third.

The same Gonzaga player missed two FTs, a layup, and fouled a 3 point shooter in the other team...all in the last minute Shocked

In her partial defense, the foul call was highly questionable.

Wow! Official almost blew another offensive foul call. Townsend of Gonzaga driving to the basket, Belmont player was clearly in the restricted area, ref began to call a charge, then switched to a block. Belmont fans are booing and Belmont coach is furious. So the refs halt play and go to review the call.

Belmont leads 55-50. About 5min to go...

Terrible officiating in this game IMO. Classic case of the refs allowing the smaller team to get away with more physicality on defense than they allow the team with the taller players in the post.

That said, Gonzaga has had some really awful turnovers.

Belmont has an incredible guard.

Why didn't the Zags foul when Belmont had the ball and just under a minute left? They didn't give themselves time enough to overcome that deficit (assuming they could play without turning the ball over on stupid mistakes).

Zags can't be dribbling around the perimeter for 9 seconds when they've only got 15

I think they were hoping to get a stop? Weren't they only down two points at that point?

Wow! Congrats to Belmont!

In any event, as others have pointed out already, a truly neutral court changes the game! NCAA needs to find a way to make ALL games neutral for these early rounds.

That's an interesting POV considering we just had a day with zero upsets

Not to be so crude so soon, but does this mean Gonzaga was overrated? I mean, they were #14 in the AP poll and lost to a team with a NET ranking of 63.

On the other hand, their conference foe BYU also took down Rutgers today, so that reflects highly upon the West Coast conference. Hard to judge these things with such a small sample size of match-ups.

This game as a 5/12 match-up would have been in Bloomington, IN since Indiana was the 4-seed of this region. So a de facto neutral court for the 5/12 game.

Is three upsets (all today) fewer than in other years’ total of first round games? pilight, I trust if anyone knows the answer you will.

Last time there were five, 2018 had nine, 2017 had four, 2016 had eight. We've got some work to do yet.

Not sure what the seeds are on those upsets, but I'd say 13 over 4seed is significant while 9-seed over 8-seed...not really an upset in my eyes.

Good point. Today’s upsets were all “double digit” teams over “single digit” seeds. Maybe pilight knows whether this happens very often.

You can see whole tournament data on this here:

Big Upsets (where the teams are more than four seeds apart) occur almost exclusively in the first two rounds

I came in on the end of this one and my eyes popped! BELMONT beating the Zags? Oh my stars and garters! But one team did look better. Congrats to the Bruins.
