Wow, I didn't know this tournament existed before just now.

I've heard of it but just wasn't sure if they were having it this year until I saw this post.

Is this like the next best tournament after the WNIT?

p.s. I'm surprised to not see IUPUI in any of these tournaments.

Essentially yes. It's been around longer than I realized - first year was 2010. Looks like it's usually 16 teams but this year is 8 teams - makes sense - the WNIT has less teams this year too.

IUPUI might have turned down bids to WNIT and/or the WBI. I don't see UW-Green Bay playing in either of those tournaments either - guessing they turned down a bid but don't know for sure.

Can you speak to why a team would turn down an invitation? I'd never heard of that before this board. Cost? Motivation?

A lot of teams have turned down bids to the WNIT. They might be too disappointed they didn't make the NCAA Tournament, they might have a lot of injuries and there are many other reasons. And this year it just might not be worth the Covid risk.

It's usually all mid-majors. However, Minnesota and Washington have played in it.

Shades' team & my team, respectively. Razz

I saw this tweet from Buffalo's coach about hoping a WNIT team drops out cuz then they'd be next in line. Unless the WBI didn't invite Buffalo (which could very well be the case), I wonder why Buffalo wouldn't have just taken a spot here. The WBI may be considered lower quality than the WNIT, but neither is the Big Dance, so what would it matter?

On a different note, it would've been interesting had Cal Baptist somehow been placed into the WBI instead of the WNIT. Would've been a much better chance of keeping their undefeated record in the WBI, but they still have a nonzero chance in the WNIT.

In a year when many universities are losing money, I wouldn’t be surprised if Athletic departments and schools didn’t allow teams to play in post season tournament that are pay to play.

The thickness of the bubble membrane may also have been a consideration for some teams. I know at least one team side-eyed the hell out of the WNIT setup and was not interested in participating in it.
