A letter released this week from US Soccer President Carlos Cordeiro claimed that his organization had offered an equal pay structure with the men’s national team, which the women had rejected. But USWNT lawyers countered that the “equal pay” offer was based on a contract the men’s team had negotiated nine years ago in 2011, and which it is itself in the midst of renegotiating.
Angering some women’s team players, Cordeiro released his letter on the eve of one of the national team’s biggest games played on US soil, a rematch of the 2019 World Cup game against Spain in front of a sold-out crowd in New Jersey.

Minutes before Wednesday's victory concluded, Cordeiro issued an apology "for the offense and pain caused by the language in this week's court filing, which did not reflect the values of our Federation or our tremendous admiration for our Women's National Team."
Cordeiro announced changes in the statement, including the hiring of the firm Latham & Watkins to join and guide the federation's legal strategy moving forward.

Per Fed. R. Civ. P. 11 and state bar ethical rules, lawyers for the U.S. Soccer Federation could not have filed this document without having client approval, meaning, notwithstanding the subsequent apology, the Federation would have had to approve what the attorneys stated in the response to the players' summary judgment motion.
As Megan Rapinoe stated (in response to Cordeiro's apology):
"That wasn't for us. That's for fans, that's for the media, that's for sponsors. That all sounded pretty similar to what we had heard before. ... That all sounded pretty similar to what we had heard before. For him to put that out saying 'Sorry,' presumably to us, we don't buy it."

Soccer president quits after sending a totally stupid message a couple of nights ago.
Julie Foudy totally blasted him for it during the US/Japan game.

His decision elevated former American midfielder Cindy Parlow Cone to become the first woman president in the history of the federation.
Parlow was a member of the 1999 World Cup Championship team. She concluded her career with 158 caps and 75 goals.
