The second penalty was pretty soft, but they missed a blatant penalty call earlier so imo it evens out in the wash.

This has to be a huge disappointment for Canada, which ranked 6th in FiveThirtyEight's SPI rating going into the WWC.

https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/2019-womens-world-cup-predictions/

Per FiveThirtyEight:
Soccer Power Index (SPI) ratings are our estimate of team strength based on each team's recent match results.

England storm into Women's World Cup semis with power and pride (ESPN)
Tom Hamilton (Senior Writer)

Quote:
Before the tournament started, Neville said he wanted the country to unite behind the Lionesses like it did for the men's team in last year's World Cup. The country went berserk, with department stores selling out of Gareth Southgate's waistcoat and the England fans' version of the Atomic Kitten song "Whole Again" ringing out the country over. Then there was "Three Lions" being sung over and over again.

In Le Havre, there was the same carnival spirit. The band played the songs, and England marched into the final four to the sound of the brass band and riding the wave of a country's dreams of World Cup success.

The early goal was a good omen for the U.S. women, who had never lost a World Cup match after scoring first,

And with her two goals against France, Rapinoe became the first U.S. player to score 4 straight goals for the team at a Women's World Cup.

I'm more worried about England than I was against France.

Agreed. England has looked like the best team in the tournament. I was expecting an England-Germany final as Germany had looked really strong up until their losing match vs. Sweden.

I’m thoroughly upset about Germany getting knocked out. I thought they’d have enough to cause some major issues in the final. I noticed Sara Däbritz was all over the field in that Sweden game, from left back to midfield and up front a few times. I understand situational play, but this was alignment. It felt like they were rotating like a volleyball team. I don’t think that helped at all.

Clearly, I’m still in mourning about that...I liked that German team more than was probably healthy. Smile

I’ve missed most of England’s games, but it seems like their Phil Neville has an appropriate amount of Sir Alex Ferguson in him to make this real dangerous.

Feeling like both teams are aggressive early. See both scoring again and possibly going to extra time. Be curious if we see Rapinoe today. No word why she's out but they're saying she might be injured as she didn't warm up.

HALFTIME: USA 2 - England 1. England is pushing hard and setting up well. USA has some nice D and a solid save late in the half. I'm expecting England to score again, just a matter if USA gets a third goal.
