anyone else watching. Didn't get to watch any of the women's matches, but watching the some of the men's games today. The matches are only 14 minutes long(2 - 7 minutes halves). Heavy contact game. USA lost their first game against Argentina 17-14. Currently Fiji(#1 ranked) are thrashing the host country Brazil.
Fiji has never won an Olympic medal. This is their best chance to win, potentially Gold, at these Olympics.

I watched some of the women's. It's tough but looks like fun. I didn't really understand some of the rules. The extra point stuff is interesting too since it seems a lot of them are missed, but I guess it's hard to have a specialist if you only get seven on the field.

The rugby union is basically the longer version of the game. It's played 15-on-15 and last 40 minutes(two halves). The field size is also reduced in sevens.

No it's not. Same pitch. A big part of what makes sevens more watchable for many people is the enormous increase in space. It makes the game more free-flowing and obviously leads to more scoring. |

In sevens the conversions (extra-point equivalent) are required to be drop-kicks, rather than place-kicks on a stationary ball on the ground. You're also required to take them quicker than in the 15-a-side game, to keep things moving. And it's a standard rugby rule that the conversion is taken in line with where the ball was touched down for the try (you can go back as far as you like). So kicks from out wide are tough, hence the misses. In all sorts of rugby you'll see players try to curl around to get under the posts for tries, to make the conversion easier. |

I've never been a big fan of rugby (although I LOVE a good Haka by anyone...especially the All Blacks), but I got TOTALLY sucked into Rugby Sevens by the amazing effort the US Women put forth in their 2 games.
I was just flipping back and forth between Olympic coverage on the TV and ran across their first game and got sucked in! LOVE the fast pace of the Sevens version of the sport. Watched their second game too and was really hoping they'd make it through the semis. Will definitely pay more attention to this sport....especially Sevens.

Rugby is one tough sport! You know the saying "Rugby players eat their dead." That's actually because of the rugby team that crashed in the Andes mountains and ate flesh of those who had dies in order to survive. I took a flight on that route from Santiago, Chile to Mendoza, Argentina and it's literally straight up, then straight down and the wind does strange things around such steep mountains. If you look at the two cities on the map, they look almost next to each other.
Anyway, I loved watching rugby sevens! I saw US/Fiji, Fiji/Australia, US/Australia and one other that involved New Zealand and somebody. Took awhile to get the rules. Their out of bounds throw in is especially bizarre, as it involves players being lifted up to catch the ball. There are rules about when the ball is dropped and about continuing to move when players pile on top of the player with the ball. Basically, if you don't form an instant tunnel to get the ball out to a teammate, the ball goes to the other team.
So, for a good time, imagine someone like La Leslie playing rugby (with the prissy bow on her hair!). I laughed myself silly imagining the sight. Current WNBA player most likely to be a rugby star: Lindsay Whalen. Obviously, Erin Phillips would be an instant star, with her father playing Australian rules football.

29-0 in the First period.
Fiji keeps scoring right on every kickoff. Score, kick, get ball, score again.
It's a rout.
They'll be celebrating in Suva tonight!
It's on NBCSN btw.
