Before the season started it would have seemed absurd that a freshman would win NPOYs, but now it seems equally absurd (to me) that a freshman won't.

The suspense will be who wins the Wade, given that freshmen are ineligible. No one really stands out to me. Evans may have rehabilitated herself in the S16 and E8 games.

Here is Paige breaking down after Geno gave her the trophy during a team video session on Monday, which means she knew about the award before the Baylor game:

Here is the official AP press conference. It's a shame that she had to receive such an accolade by sterile Zoom instead of a standing ovation audience, but I suppose we should be grateful that there was an award at all.

What makes you think she knew about the award on Monday? I haven't seen any time stamps on any articles or video that would indicate that.

Would Paige have won POY if she had "stayed home" and played for Minnesota?

Impossible to know but interesting to consider.

Definitely an interesting question. On the one hand she had hype before playing a game with UConn so she would still get attention at a lesser program. She would also likely be putting much bigger numbers (25/10 not out of the question). She just wouldn’t be on nearly as good a team though and winning matters with these awards.

I linked the AP article, which says: "Bueckers was informed she won the award by coach Geno Auriemma during a team video session on Monday."

Unless UConn was holding the video session after the Baylor game, press conferences and showers, which seems somewhat unlikely at such a late time of night, I assumed the video session was sometime Monday before the Baylor game.

No.

At the very most, Minnesota Bueckers would have been Caitlyn Clark on a worse team than Iowa. But given her temperament to be more of a facilitating player than a ball dominant player (yes, Usage Rate again), I doubt she would have scored as much as Clark. A fortiori, Bueckers would not have won NPOY because Clark sans Bueckers wouldn't have.

Freshman don't win NPOYs unless "something more" than statistics are present. The something more for Bueckers is that she led her young team to the top of the poll rankings and to an undefeated season in tournament play. Moreover, because she was on UConn, she had nationally televised games in which she showed magical play and clutch heroics. Finally, her freshman season has stood out above all other freshman who have ever attended the school, UConn, that has produced more AA's, Olympians and WNBA players than any other program.

At Minnesota, none of these "something mores" would have been present for Bueckers, just as they aren't for Clark at Iowa.

Bueckers has now won the NPOY from ESPN, AP, Naismith and USBWA. She was ineligible as a freshman for the Wade, which went to NaLyssa Smith. We still await the Wooden Award.
