Unlike the men (where the Big 10 (only 1 of 9 teams advanced to the sweet 16) bombed and the Pac 12 soared (4 in the sweet 16 with no top 4 seeds - also there only loss was by Colorado who had to take the court after hearing reports about the shooting in Boulder) so far the conference performances don't seem to show much largely because there were only 3 upsets. The SEC, Big 10 and WCC each suffered an upset but the WCC (BYU) also scored an upset.

The ACC and SEC appeared to underperform somewhat in the first round. The ACC had 3 teams lose that were 9 or 10 seeds and Georgia Tech nearly got upset as a 5 seed. The SEC nearly suffered another upset with Texas A&M and Kentucky won by only 8, meaning the only 3 top 4 seeds not to win by double digits were all from the same conference. There were only 4 other games decided by less than 10 points, all involving 8-9 or 7-10 matchups. We should get more clarity in the second round.

Also comparing two rounds of one tournament to one round of another will always be skewed.

The B12 doesn't get much respect on this board, but they did about as well as possible in the first round. Five wins with only their lowest seeded team (Iowa State) getting a close game.

The ACC gets penalized here for getting in Wake Forest and Florida State, neither of which should have been included and played like it. The NET looks to be even more P5 friendly than RPI was.

Good analysis but one small correction--OkSt was an 8-seed while Iowa State was a 7-seed. However, I'd argue OkSt's opponent (9-seed Wake Forest) was a much easy draw than Iowa State's opponent (10-seed Michigan State).

Couple of interesting Big 10/SEC matchups today:

#5 Iowa vs #4 Kentucky
#6 Michigan vs #3 Tennessee

I'm going to predict a split, but don't ask me who wins.

I'm glad Indiana, Michigan, and Iowa have each pulled off some pretty nice upsets. Otherwise Maryland's meltdown tonight would have painted the entire conference in a very bad light.

As measured by cumulative tournament record, I'm pretty sure the Pac 12 has been the best P5 conference in the country for 4 or 5 years running. It's been a very fun time to be a WBB fan on the west coast.

Never would have predicted the Big Ten would win as many games as the SEC.

Over the past decade (2012-2021) the Pac-12 has had 6 different teams make the Final 4 (Stanford, Arizona, Oregon, Oregon St, Washington and Cal). The ACC is the only other conference with even 3 (Notre Dame, Louisville and Syracuse. The SEC has 2 (South Carolina and Mississippi St). Baylor, Maryland and UConn are the only other teams to make the final 4. So out of 14 teams that have made the Final 4 the Pac 12 has 43%.

In those 9 tournaments 26 of the 36 spots in the Final Four were number 1 seeds. There were 6 2 seeds (3 from the Pac 12), 1 3 seed (Arizona), 1 4 seed (Syracuse) 1 5 seed (Louisville) and 1 7 seed (Washington). So 5 of the 10 teams seeded 2 or lower that made the Final 4 were from the Pac 12.

To be fair the Pac 12 is 0-7 in the semifinals over that period before this season. The Pac 12 has never made the final game and its forerunner, the Pac 10, has not won since 1992. But in the past decade the Pac 12 has been the deepest conference and has also been consistently underseeded.

Pretty big turnaround. In the 25 years before that (1987-2011) only Stanford reached the F4 from the P10/12.

I usually don't count intraconference games towards the standings

Absolutely. The Pac 10 was a sub-par conference from roughly 1995-2010, and I think that hurt Stanford. Cal was an awful program until 2005. It is unclear whether they will slip back into mediocrity (based on the past two years they might but I see reason for hope next year). Arizona was dealt a devastating blow with the death of Shawtenice Polk that sunk their program for more than a decade. UCLA and USC have generally been good but since their national championships in the 70's and 80's they haven't made the Final Four. The real turnaround is in Oregon where both teams have been consistently top notch for the past 5 years, and Scott Rueck and Kelly Graves have made the Beaver State a hotbed for women's basketball. It won't last forever but for now the Pac 12 is clearly the best, most competitive conference.

I was at the game when Cal came here to play Mercer just after New Years of 2003. We were bad even by ASun standards then and I was shocked at how much trouble Cal had putting us away. The game was competitive to the last two minutes.
