The W has been working on starting a team in Philly for over a year now per Natasha Cloud (via Clubhouse)

This would be very relevant to my interest as I live in the Philly metro now. I'd love if they built a W specific arena over the bridge in Camden.

Is there any additional info outside of this tweet? Does Natasha have some Philly connection?

Her hometown is listed as Broomall, fwiw. Otherwise, idk.

Anyone got any potentially good nicknames for a Philly W team?

She went to HS in the Philly suburbs and college at St Joe's

Isn't Philadelphia Freedom the name of the indoor tennis team?

I feel like Philadelphia Stars would be fitting if Stars hadn't been a W te.for 20 years.

I wonder who are the potential owner(s).

Will Smith and his wife Jada Pinkett Smith are part-owners of the Philadelphia 76ers. Would they be interested in a WNBA team as well?

I wouldn't get too excited...

https://www.nbcsports.com/philadelphia/sixers/nba-rumors-philly-native-wnba-star-natasha-cloud-says-league-working-philadelphia-team

Quote:
"It's not necessarily a secret - that's what I was told - we are trying to get a Philly team. It has been in the works for a year and a half. Put a little pressure, not only on the city, but on the [WNBA], too. Our thing - for us to progress, our league needs to expand. We have to have more than 144 jobs. [...] Listen, it's in the works. I'm trying my damndest to bring a team back to Philly."

Then Cloud clarified on Twitter...

Quote:
I didn’t say league. I said individuals in Philly have been working on it.

The problem with expansion is that it's hard to make a strong argument that it would increase overall income. An extra couple of markets with teams might lead to a slight uptick in ratings, merchandise sales and general interest, but it's not likely to be much overall. But if we went from, say, 12 teams to 14, there are immediately two more teams taking a slice of the pie. Established TV contracts and central sponsorships aren't going to go up 2/12ths because of two new teams - they're going to be the same amounts split 14 ways instead of 12 (7.1% each instead of 8.3%). So you have to be convinced that eventual future growth is going to be worth that, and/or there has to be a significant enough new franchise fee (that someone's willing to pay) to off-set the loss.

It's good to have people interested, because it makes the league look like a worthwhile investment and gives them a fallback if current ownership groups want out, but I'm not surprised the League has been happy to sit at a solid 12 for a long time now.

I guess one could argue, in theory, that adding 2 big markets could incentivize a higher tv deal the next time around.

I think that's precisely why we have teams in Chicago and Atlanta. But unless there's going to be a genuine competitor 'bidding' against ESPN for the main deal, or ESPN themselves ask for new markets specifically, I doubt they add teams preemptively.

I'm with Richyyy on this. I don't see much motivation for expansion, especially assuming that the lack of announced sale price for Atlanta means there was no sale price.

It was good news, though, that the Dream stayed put.

Or the Philadelphia Fillies.

There's something uncomfortably antibellum about the Belles, but I do like the Bells. I don't think you need the extra "e" to feminize or anthropomorphize it.

A team in Philly could go the way of – in some palatable fashion – using one of the Pennsylvania State Symbols for its name.

Notable ones:

Tree: Eastern hemlock
State bird: Ruffed grouse
Flower: Mountain laurel
Insect: Pennsylvania firefly
Animal: White-tailed deer
Amphibian: Eastern Hellbender
Dog: Great Dane
Fish: Brook trout
Beverage: Milk
Beautification and conservation plant: Penngift crown vetch

And while the state doesn't have an official "state food" of sorts, we all know what it would be.

Unfortunately, the US Constitution wasn't written in a catchier year (1787). 87ers or "seveners" or even "sevies" really doesn't have the same ring as "Sixers".

Anything related to Keystone is out cuz of A) the pipeline and B) "Go Stoners!" Sad

As pilight mentioned, the Philadelphia Fox was a former wbb team, which, ehh. (We already have the Lynx, y'know?) The only other defunct women's pro teams in Philly I could find were soccer teams: the Philadelphia Independence (as j-spoon suggested) and the Philadelphia Charge. Independence I could definitely see – go Indies? Charge could become Chargers like LA(/San Diego), I suppose. Shades' Bellringers, or just Ringers for short, is another option I like.

I think any namers will either go the US-history route or the Ben Franklin-electricity route though (or more likely a name that is able to incorporate both somehow).
