This list is comprised of potential head/assistant/support staff openings ... it does not mean that the assistant wouldn't necessarily stay on that staff, but with the head coaching change, it is an assumption at the moment that a new HC would hire their own staff.

With announcement of Army's Dave Margarity set to retire at season's end, I went ahead and started 2021 Coaching Movement. Will go through positions that were not adjusted from 2020 and scale down list at first chance.

I'm still surprised Niecee Nelson at PFW is allowed to finish the season. Yes I know her contract ends in March, but it's not like she's making millions. These young ladies under her are literally faltering.

Tracking how many of these open spots from last year just go away will be something to monitor. COVID-19 has really altered the budgets for many athletic departments. 30+ openings for DOBO's already, if those schools could get by without some support staff this year, who is to say the powers to be in the ath department say we don't need those positions anymore?

Excerpts:

"I have coached my entire career with personal and professional goals in alignment," McFerrin said in a statement released by the school. "But things change over time. I remained at Memphis the past two seasons to see the renovation of Elma Roane Fieldhouse completed and to coach a group of young women in which I have a tremendous belief.

"In arriving at the decision to retire, this time, personal reasons have won out over professional ones. It is time for a new season in my life."

It seems a bit curious to not finish this current season, but there could be an undisclosed personal situation of which we are not aware.

Would this be a good year for a school to encourage a coach to "retire". Would they be privy to a larger pool of candidates than next year? Although they can somewhat write this year off, if it's another year of same old, same old and the result is obvious, is this the year to make that big move? Or would the other prospective coaches be unwilling to leave during this time?

Seems to me this is the kind of year a lot of schools are going to hit "pause" and just not do anything. I could be wrong though.

Damn, I guess coaches got their "pass" last year and it is business as usual right now.

Presumably all of these contracts were up ... if they were buyouts, though, I think we have a story ...

True. I guess they are all hoping to spend less this upcoming year on a search combined with a lower HC salary.

I'll be interested to see how many of them, like SMU, had their "team" decide to halt their season due to "COVID." Having the coach get canned now suggests either underlying coaching issues contributed to the decision, or maybe the admin was unhappy that it happened under that coach's watch.

I thought his contract had been extended recently? Am I wrong?

You are not wrong! They gave him a "routine" one-year extension in June and then told him to hit the bricks in March.

He had a few years left...looks like it was through 2024-25. He was paid $650K annually (base of $400k and another $250k through media, etc). I don't know what the payout was but I'm guessing they are gonna spend 7 figures to ask him to leave.

That's a chunk of change. And I wonder how much they'll have left to pay the new coach ...

So, if you're Wisconsin, who do you go after? Is Wisconsin a good state for girl's HS basketball? I assume it's very Volleyball heavy since the Badgers are a perennial top-5 team. This new coach will have to compete with Volleyball and Meghan Duffy at Marquette, who IMO, if she stays, will get a lot of recruits that could possibly go to Wisconsin. She's just a great young coach.
