Sky looking to make signing emerging star Cheyenne Parker a priority

"Cheyenne is very important to what we want to do," Wade said. "I love it that we've seen big leaps from her every year. And she's added things every year, like shooting the 3 and better decision-making. She is our primary focus (in free agency). We want her to identify with the Chicago Sky." |

"After we sign Cheyenne, we have space for only one player so it's going to be competitive," Wade said. "We've got the draft, we've got a few players in free agency that we have on the radar and Prince and Colson could be competing for spots." |

"Diamond is good now," Wade said. "She's in the gym, she's working with a trainer and in a good place now." |

"We've only got room for one player"
Are these the 10 he's got on the roster ATM if he re-signs Ch. Parker?
Sloot
Copper/Quigley
Deshields/Williams
Ch. Parker/Stevens/Mavunga
Dolson/Hebard
with the last spot being between
pick #8, Colson and Prince?
pick #8 Evans seems like the perfect fit, if she is off the board maybe Westbrook?

Yes: https://herhoopstats.com/salary-cap-sheet/wnba/team/chicago-sky-11eaecc7-355f-1c4a-b611-2362f5011b0b/
If they could get Parker for around 140k they'd technically have enough room for two more, but it's reasonable to assume that that's unlikely.
That 'aggressive in free agency' thing is therefore also looking unlikely, like we all said when that was suggested. |

My option would be to cut Mavunga to free up a little money, as Parker is probably going to cost the max. (And why does the WNBA have two maxes? Isn't that an oxymoron?)

The NBA's got about 10 of them. 'Maximum' always actually means 'maximum that particular player is eligible for'.
I'd happily cut Mavunga too, but it's not like it saves them much. A younger, rock-bottom minimum would only be 12k cheaper. They still wouldn't have enough room to give Parker the supermax, and they already (just) have enough to give her the standard max and keep the #8 pick in their final spot. |

But isn't every WNBA player eligible for the supermax? And the other max?

Not necessarily, no. And certainly not when signing with any team. You need at least five Years of Service and you need to be re-signing with your old team to get the Supermax (there are some other routes, but that's the main one). |

The only way the Sky can be aggressive in free agency is to drop kick one expensive post player to the curb.

Figure it out and rid themselves of Dolson. Before she becomes Jayne Appel.

Copper's probably the Sky's most realistic trade candidate. Offensively it was a career year for her, and trading her away could give them good cap flexibility and/or allow them to address another area of need. Only if DeShields is really back in action though.

Why not try a buyout? Her contract less vet min seems fair. She should be able to find a landing spot for the vet min.

Also that kind of buyout again saves them almost nothing. The buyout cost counts on the cap, and then you still have to fill the roster spot with at least a minimum. |

The needle will not move any closer to a championship for the Sky by acquiring Candace Parker and they lose the other Parker in free agency. The Sky's championship hopes will end up in SOS territory especially if SD is still on the team.

Azurá Stevens was at Duke today, for her final physical therapy appointment.
She is going to Phoenix tomorrow to train there.
