Timmsy said she would be bringing some Aussies with her. Now, we have Vealy as a backup point guard (and give her time to learn and develop), and Tamara Moore can back up the two.

Is Michele going to bring Jessica Bibby over?

It would be a bit redundant - Bibby is a 5'7 shooter.

Nothing is set in stone but hopefully the Mercury will announce another Aussie signing soon Smile

Oh goodie, I like her. The Mercury being one of my top 4 teams, this gives me something to be happy about this offseason.

Veal could start for quite a few teams in this league. She will make a solid backup point guard.

Didn't the Merc already get burnt by going down the "too many foreigners" road?

Only by foreigners with kids (Brogan, Stepanova), though Fallon in a way. Then again, Brandy Reed hurt us more.

Fair point but considering the coaching staff is predominantly Australian, it give more incentives for the Aussies to stay (and remember, this could be their future NT coach!).

Don't know if Timmsy had anything to do with this, as it seems Vealy had this plan for sometime. It will be great seeing her back playing. I guess the house sitting duties have finished. Wink

What are the chances of Batkovic joining Seattle this summer? Has she been in Europe this winter?

She's been playing in Spain, on the same team as Claw, Page and Valdemoro (is she going to play in the WNBA? She's apparently been entertaining the idea).

I really don't know but I don't think she will. Suzy, prove my intuition wrong!

It seems like playing with LJ on the defending champs in Seattle would be tempting, even if the $$$ isn't.
If Veal comes to Phoenix, where does that leave Jae Cross?

I don't know - maybe she'll follow hubby to Houston. Maybe Phoenix will keep both; you could swing either to off guard (provided Vealy has regained her shooting!). Maybe she'll be used as trade bait. Maybe VEALY will be trade bait. Let's check with TPTB Wink

If Valdemoro returns to the Comets, they won't be as bad as many expected, especially after signing a Tarnado looking to strike again.

It will be great to see Kristen back.

She's got game...unfortunately Shu was enamored with TJ the last time Vealy was here.

I gotta ask, without having seen her play; aren't y'all getting a little excited about a backup PG?

I'll say! Shocked
Arrow

Canberra Sunday Times, Sunday 9 November 2003, p. 62

Quote:
AUSTRALIAN Opals guard Kristen Veal almost quit basketball, after walking out on a minimum $55,000 contract in the world’s best competition and working in a Sydney car wash.

Veal shocked her American WNBA club, Phoenix Mercury, when she abandoned pre-season training in May for “personal reasons”.

She understood the enormity of what she’d done — and seriously contemplated never playing basketball again.

Vealy is just a great kid with a sweetheart personality.

She has played for PHX in the past and many of us have watched her play live or via videotape from Australia.

She played in two Finals matches on the same team as Lauren Jackson, and Kristen (not Lauren) was the MVP.

Pressed into action as a young rookie in 2001, she averaged 4.3 apg, while playing only 22 minutes per game.

In a pre-season game, she once had 13 assists.

She has great court vision and passes to where a player should be, not where they are.

When her confidence is not eroded by coaching (i.e. C. Coop, Shu), and her shot is on, she is quite a threat.

She is capable of making some incredible passes and this fan looks forward to her giving quality minutes behind Diana.

In the scheme of things (free agency and all), our joy is not unfounded.
