I guess it is time for a new thread.

As a reminder, CBS Sports Network does not paid to be rated. Their numbers will not be available.

Why is no one watching TV, lack of new programming? Seems like the summer vacation situation has to be way down.

Not having baseball until now as well as the special summer sports events has not helped as that has decreased the amount of casual viewing on ESPN. There is still some scripted and reality stuff in the can, although none of the popular stuff. After the initial spike of people trying TV, it pretty quickly sunk down to the approximate levels that would have been expected without the virus.

For those wondering about predictions for this season, it seems like the start of each sport has seen a spike and then a drop down to approximately normal levels so I would expect healthy numbers this weekend and then more usual levels after that.

Cord cutting, I would think. The number of cable subscribers continues to fall.

I can't remember what was so significant about the 2012 opener?

LA and Seattle, featured the number 1 and 2 draft picks. Looking back at the 2012 draft...so many “what were they thinking” moments.

WNBA posts largest opening weekend audience in eight years
Saturday’s Sparks-Mercury WNBA opening day game averaged 540,000 viewers on ABC, marking the league’s largest opening weekend audience since 2012 (Mercury-Lynx: 804K). Viewership increased 19% over last year’s first game on the network, Mercury-Storm (452K).

Earlier in the day, Storm-Liberty averaged 419,000 on ESPN — likely the largest WNBA regular season audience on cable since Mercury-Lynx on ESPN in 2016 (505K). The game marked the WNBA debut of Liberty G Sabrina Ionescu. [ESPN PR 7.26]

Maybe it's just the lack of available programming, but ESPN must be liking something about what they're getting from the WNBA. 13 more games added across ABC/ESPN/ESPN2: https://twitter.com/richarddeitsch/status/1287796971953180677?s=20

Or this might be their apology for posting something incorrect about the players from the
Liberty and storm walking off the court during the national anthem. And only posting a correction 11 hours later..

I edited the ratings into the OP. As always, numbers are from showbuzzdaily.com

Storm-Liberty did well enough to give us more detailed demographics ratings as expressed by a percentage of that group in the sample that was watching the game on average.

18-49: .13
F18-49: .11
M18-49: .16
18-34 .12
F12-34: .09
M12-34: .10
25-54: .15
50+: .20

That is actually pretty healthy female viewership (or poor male viewership) and solid viewership among the young (or poor viewership among older people).

One has to think that the Sunday ESPN game was hurt by the NWSL game, which averaged 653,000 viewers. Over on NBC, Premier League Lacrosse around the same time as the ABC games averaged 334,000 on Saturday and 341,000 on Sunday.

Yeah, what the hell was Liberty G.M. John Whisenant thinking when he selected Kelley Cain at #7?

7/30 Storm-Mystics ESPN 168,000

I guess that scheduling the Sparks in the late game last night was not ideal.

On the list, I am adding first runs of games that we do not have ratings for in case someone releases them at some point.

I'm curious to see their ratings with the NBA back now. Hopefully it's not a steep decline.

I guess that having part of the game off of the main channel is a valid strategy for technically boosting your ratings.

The ESPN2 portion of Sky-Mercury averaged 83,000 viewers. It averaged .03 percent of the sample in 18-49, 25-54, and 50+ and .02 percent of the sample in 18-34 and 12-34. Of course, that is not an adequate number of decimal places to really get any insight, but there was no difference in 18-49 or 12-34 between male and female ratings.

Is it possible that the over saturation of games available on national TV is causing the per game ratings to go down? Kind of sucks that more people are probably watching games because there are a ton available to watch but it's dragging down the individual ratings that matter most.

I agree. About the only sport I watch is WNBA, and I usually watch a lot of games, but this year 3 a night six days a week is overkill. Six hour of coach potato a night is too much for me.

I'd be curious to see the comparative NBA numbers and see if they are having the same oversaturation effect. Obviously they have a bigger local market/casual fan base to bring up game to game numbers but getting the typical 250k WNBA fan base to watch national double headers 4 nights in a row seems unlikely and there aren't enough casual or regional viewers to compensate for that.

Great point. You can see that even the game threads here get minimal response.

All of a sudden the three leagues I follow most closely -- the NBA, the WNBA and MLB -- are all on at the same time. I've decided to ignore the NBA for the most part, but when playoffs begin, that will change. It's the best basketball in the world, and I'm a basketball guy.

Same here. It's amazing how the NBA took months off, cut a whole bunch of games out of the schedule, carefully designed a complicated set-up so that they could play at all... and still managed to come back and play weeks of games that I couldn't find it in me to give a toss about.

The only reason that they're playing these games, and the only reason that they play 82 normally, is money. From a sporting perspective, and a viewer interest perspective, it's wildly too many. 22 might be a little too short, but honestly I think 34 was plenty for a regular season. You guys only play these games to decide who plays who in the ones that actually matter, anyway. I don't know how baseball fans retain any interest over a 162-game season.

But I digress. Some of the numbers do look pretty poor, but maybe we need more context. Has everything, even live sport, just gone down across the board? Or is all this WNBA basketball being available killing the interest in any given game?

I'd argue the surplus of national TV games is diluting the audience pool. In a typical season we can expect 150-250k viewers for an ESPN/ESPN2 game. Having 2 games a night for 4 straight nights is going to spread out the audience. I'm a massive fan and in the last few seasons, I managed to watch almost all national TV games love or via DVR and most Phoenix games on league pass. This season, with the compressed schedule and almost daily national games, I'm lucky to keep up with just the Phx games. When normally I would have a week, sometimes two in between ESPN games, it was way easier to watch them all.

I'd say the same 150-250k are still watching, and maybe even more due to added interest and coverage, but that pool is being divided up between several games a day, instead of all being diverted to one game a week.

Does Nielsen have a way of measuring "unique" viewers? I doubt it, but that may be the only metric that could be improving this season. For instance, maybe. Normal season has 500-750k unique viewers divided among 16 national games, but perhaps this season is averaging 1million or more unique viewers but split among 40+national games.

Was this the game that the soccer game overran prior to tip and the first half was moved to ESPN News? If so, that could explain the drop in views.

I was worried with the NBA playing at the same time that ratings would be low. I hope they don't get worse when the playoffs start. Does question what they'll do next season if the NBA is planning to start around Christmas. NBA playoffs would then take place through the summer.
