When the WNBA was formed in 1997, she was the first pick (sixth overall) of the New York Liberty in the league’s inaugural draft. During Wicks’ five-year stint with the Liberty (1997-2002), while playing its home games at Madison Square Garden, New York reached the WNBA finals four times with Wicks as a captain. Additionally, she was named to the 2000 WNBA All-Star team while claiming the league’s Sportsmanship Award that same year.

After being inducted into the “Liberty Ring of Honor,” Wicks later worked with the U.S. State Department as a sports ambassador, sharing her love of basketball around the globe.

I posted this years ago, but I'm reposting it for those who never saw it.

In 2000, the outstanding journalist Alisa Solomon was covering the New York Liberty for the Village Voice. At this time, both the WNBA and the Liberty were intensely promoting WNBA players in heterosexual marriages who were mothers. Simultaneously, the WNBA and the Liberty were trying to keep hidden the fact that a good number of WNBA players and a good number of fans were lesbians. In that atmosphere, Sue Wicks gave Alisa Solomon this remarkable quote:

"... Wicks is one of the few players willing to discuss the league's squeamishness about lesbians. 'I can't say how many players are gay,' notes Wicks, 'but it would be easier to count the straight ones.'"
