Interesting note at the end of the ESPN article about his hire:
Schaefer will be the first male head coach to lead the Longhorns program since Page in the 1970s. Texas now only has two women head coaches (swimming and diving and soccer) across the athletic program.

Seems to be a trend anymore. 😢

I just like to see coaches loyal to their teams... |
I get that, too, but....like most of us, if your job offer consists of a more appealing place/school, why not take advantage? Especially if it's in your home turf.
I don't really like the flittin' around of the coaches like McGuff and Neighbors, which seems a little bit more like *fishing* for a better team to win with, but Vic really did make a huge difference over his 8 years, and I'd say he's entitled to make choices like this....and he also leaves a program that could continue on its winning ways. He certainly built up a great fan base there.
MEANWHILE, I'd LOVE to see a guy like Karl Smesko (FGCU) finally make it into a P5 team....he's originally an Ohio boy, but....Starkville isn't TOO far from Ft. Myers, as the crow flies.

Nobody likes Starkville. The question is whether she would find it preferable to sitting out. |
What is Starkville like?

Not sure why there is so much surprise here about this. Texas is a HUGE step up, in prestige, platform, resources, recruiting. Basically everything. I wasn't surprised he'd take it. Great choice by Texas. Not surprised they'd go big.
I feel sorry for Miss St fans, but that's just reality. Same thing has happened to them in football. Some schools are destinations, some are stop-overs on the way up the ladder.
And for years I've put Aston on the top five "does the least with the most" list. Wherever she ends up, I predict she will continue to underperform. Teams are poorly prepared, disorganized, and she is a horrible in-game strategic coach. Good decision by Texas to move on.

Even if the alternative was a great city like Austin for $2M?
All is relative.

Anyone seen any comment from Kim on this?
She may be in the Naismith HOF now, but she finally has serious competition in her conference. U of Texas built in recruiting advantages combined with a real coach and motivator. She was probably rooting for Aston to get a lifetime contract.

Chloe Bibby entered the transfer portal. She wasn't quite as effective this past season she was pre-injury the previous season but Vic started her The entire season. Perhaps she's A player he like to follow him to Austin.

I actually like the move, though I'm still a bit gobsmacked. "Praise the Lord and hook 'em, Horns" doesn't sound quite right to my ears, although I'm sure I'll get used to it. I've always had kind of a soft spot for Texas, even as a Tennessee and now JMU fan, that I could never explain. It goes back to the Jody Conradt years.

Crissakes...if Vic gets the Texas job, he might catch Geno. |
Texas will become the UCONN of the south and Vic may retire with the 3rd-most NCs. If Geno/Tara/Kim etc) had been at UT since 1985, they'd have 20 titles.
Happiest person hearing the news- Dawn.
Most pissed-Kim, although I believe she might like the challenge.
Now Howee will see what a real coach can do. |
Dude, 20? I doubt that-He should've won the 2017 & 2018 NC and couldn't do it. |
Dude. The point is to stress the fertility of the Lone Star State soil by suggesting, with a wee bit of hyperbole, that the game's greatest coaches, with 35 yrs at UT, would have the most NCs, by far.
