According to Trump, it should be available any day now. But Trump is a pathological liar.

Another Trump-ism. We know no such thing.

Asymptomatic (no symptoms) people can still be carriers and spreaders of the virus. Therein lies the biggest problem.

Just to clarify for anyone who doesn't read this article... they did say that the 2020 Olympics will not be "cancelled." That doesn't mean that the 2020 Olympics will happen in 2020. Many are predicting a one-year postponement till summer 2021. We'll see.

The JOC member of the IOC wanted a postponement in an article earlier this week. If Japan opposes hosting the games when the IOC decides to do it, I don't see how a postponement can be avoided.

Let's not forget: the International Olympic Committee has a long history establishing that it should never be trusted. Will they make the best decision to ensure the safety and well-being of athletes, coaches, referees, sports journalists, and fans? I hope so. Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

Than lets hope the decision is made at the right time
I for one dont think the Olympics will start in July either postoned or moved to 2021

I wouldn’t be shocked at all to see a year without any sports, really. Certainly no sports with live spectators. This thing is a life-changer, and not in the short-term.

The Canadian rep to the IOC told the committee last week they should postpone the games and those remarks apparently weren't well-received at the time.

Veteran International Olympic Committee member Dick Pound told USA TODAY Sports on Monday afternoon that the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games are going to be postponed amid the coronavirus pandemic.

On the basis of the information the IOC has, postponement has been decided,” Pound said in a phone interview. “The parameters going forward have not been determined, but the Games are not going to start on July 24, that much I know.

So for the W and (other) American professional sports leagues on hold at the moment, what does it all mean? Better yet, what will it all mean? If anything...

Really depends on when this virus settles down and gets controlled throughout the world. I do think ppd. it a full year into summer 2021 is best. Ppd it until the Fall would disrupt all the Fall leagues.

On a related note, the only sport that legitimately needs to be in the summer/is weather-dependent is baseball (although maybe all 30 MLB teams have back-up indoor sports stadiums to fall back on, but most likely not). Football, soccer, basketball - all those can be played at any time of the year... I wonder if the NFL would consider delaying the start of its own season in order to accommodate the finishing of other leagues such as the NBA/MLB, given that the league's team schedules for the upcoming football season haven't even been released yet - if the virus has even calmed down significantly enough by then, that is.

All those many, many fall leagues that the IOC give a crap about...

You must be kidding. Would the NFL do anything to possibly lessen its own revenue to accommodate the needs of the NBA, Major League Baseball, and other sports? No way in hell.

Didn’t mean to imply it would purely be out of the goodness of the Goodell’s little heart. Rolling Eyes If we were to have a scenario where the NBA finishes out their playoffs in September, that would surely eat up if nothing else tv ratings since the NBA plays on sundays, let alone any “valuable” media coverage. Really as long as the Super Bowl is held before the onset of March Madness, maybe the NFL thinks a short delay could be in its best interest. But maybe I “must be kidding” about that, too. Laughing All I know is, it’s been a most unusual year, so really anything can & will happen from here on out.

A few years ago, Adam Silver mentioned winter ball as a possibility for the WNBA to see if it would give the league a spark. This might be the perfect season to test it out.

You can’t reasonably play either baseball or football later in the year because of the weather, so you’d have to get both leagues to truncate their seasons. I don’t think MLB will start play before July, which means at least half their season is lost already.

The football season is already September to February. That's essentially, y'know, winter. Not sure how the weather's going to get any worse at other times of year.

If the Olympics get canceled or postponed to 2021

And life gets back to sort of normal by July maybe something like a 2 game per team pre season all in one week (one mid week one weekend game, cut roster to 12 on the off Monday start season Tuesday)

A 16 game season

you play the five teams in your conference twice
and the 6 teams in the opposite conference once each

(ideally you push for a 22 game season playing each of the other 11 teams twice, but 16 seems more doable and significantly shorter than 22 and the conferences are more even then usual, the west is slightly better but the east is more evenly matched so the uneven amount of games won't skew thing too much IMO)

then you do the playoffs the same with two one and done rounds and shorten the semis and finals to best two out of three (3 weeks)

or if you need it to be shorter do the first 3 round as one and done with a best 2 out of 3 final, (two weeks)

or even shorter do a final 8 tourny style where all eight teams start in round one like the elite eight 1 vs 8 2 vs 7 etc and play single game eliminations to the end. ( all round 1 games on double header Tuesday and double header Wednesday, round 2 both games Saturday double header, round 3 championship game on Monday or Tuesday night) (1 week )

and you still have the same amount of 4 lottery teams going into 2021

again just making lists and hypotheticals cause I am bored

Divisional playoffs are the first week in Jan, and the remaining games through the Super Bowl are held at neutral sites in warm places. And yeah, winter weather gets worse after that, for both players and fans.

The NFL isn't rescheduling anything to help anyone else anyway.

One thing I haven't seen this board delve into yet - maybe because it's still too early in this pandemic - is how this pandemic is going to affect the owners of WNBA teams. I don't know enough about each owner/ownership group to know what other assets they own that might get hit hard by the pandemic (if someone is bored at home and wants a research project, be my guest!). Even when(/if?) Congress' $2 trillion package is approved, who knows how that'll really end up affecting things.

For example, we've probably all heard of the specific situation Kelly Loeffler has found herself in (the Dream thread talks about it if ya haven't), but I personally doubt it'll get severe enough to negatively affect the Dream organization.

Otherwise, the League could find itself scrambling if even one owner runs out of cash and feels they have to sell their portion of the team, or worse - the team itself. Still, it's probably too early in the game to contemplate all this. But as things are now, it's looking like a good move to me that the League chose to stay at 12 teams and not expand for a little while...

As for the owners, we know that Simon Properties (Fever owners) have closed all their shopping malls and there are a lot of them. So that's potential problem. Another problem is that nearly all casinos in the country are closed so that might impact the Sun or Aces. Next we know all the NBA teams are not playing so the money tree planted next to the Mercury, Liberty, Fever, Lynx and Mystics may be withering, not to mention whatever general support the NBA gives the WNBA. Finally, ESPN is owned by Disney whose parks are closed. Disney has Disney+ now a new streaming service which might be benefiting from all the people sheltering in place. I don't know how it works but doesn't seem like ESPN would be all that interesting to watch now and have few eyeballs to sell.

As a general matter the franchise owners are generally wealthy individuals and such people usually have a of $ in the stock market. Consequently - their net worth has probably gone down a lot. Around the time of the 2008 debacle 2 teams folded (Houston and Sacramento) and two others almost did (Dream and Shock - now Wings.) The latter 2 found new owners the former folded. Perhaps fans of the other teams can add to this.

Bottom line - no reason now to think any team will go under, but a lot of bad news out there and some reasons to be concerned.

If the curve starts flattening, I could see the W as the canary in the coal mine starting as scheduled in mid-May. Maybe without fans in attendance to start.
