Schedule version 3

Got rid of the "all twelve playing at once" on the final day and the empty date before it. This version doesn't have the clean halfway demarcation where everybody plays once then everyone plays again.

Definitely no need for everyone to play on the final day. Given that not everyone can play at the same time anyway, the central reason for it can't be achieved. So they may as well not bother at all. Only reason I could see them doing it is if ESPN demands to have their choice of everybody for a final day timeslot, but even then you could shift the games around a bit with a week or two left, rather than having to put them all on the same day.

Version 4

Eliminated all instances of teams playing each other in consecutive weeks. Made sure everyone had a "home" and "away" on weeks (or opening weekend) with only two games.

3800 new cases in Florida today.

According to projections from a model by scientists at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and the University of Pennsylvania, Florida has been waving red flags that could predict even more COVID-19 cases to come, CNN reported.

“That makes me very worried because, at the numbers they’re now seeing, it’s very easy to start doubling and lose control of the epidemic,” Dr. David Rubin, director of PolicyLab at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, told CNN on Thursday.

Florida has actually decreased testing from late May.

Ironically, right on the heels of what Randy has posted with references to Philadelphia, it's been reported from Florida that five Philadelphia Phillies players and three staff members at the team's spring training facility have tested positive for Covid-19:

https://nypost.com/2020/06/19/phillies-have-major-coronavirus-outbreak-at-spring-training-facility/

Update: now, according to ESPN, it's the Phillies AND the Blue Jays have shut down their minor league facilities:

Florida's cases are out of control. Over 4,000 just yesterday. I do wonder if the league is looking to go elsewhere if they can finalize something in time. Players are supposedly flying into their respective cities soon to start camp. I sure plans need to me made quickly if they're going to Bradenton or if they're switching to Vegas or even Mohegan Sun.

I feel like it'd be too late to completely change locations now? Confused We're virtually a month out from the start of the season and they really can't start the season too much later than that. Boy oh boy, whichever players/staff show up are really gonna have to be enclosed in a small bubble in order to prevent outbreaks. If only they had somehow been able to start a season right as everything went into lockdown in mid-March. We could be wrapping up a season by now that would've been conducted in a less risky environment - this seems like the worst time to start/restart a season. Embarassed

The projected start date for the MLB is now July 24, same date as the WNBA. Really sucks that baseball will take away any opening day publicity from the W. Maybe Engelbert can have the W start a day or two earlier?

Let’s see whether MLB even gets there. The union overwhelmingly rejected ownership’s last offer, so it seems like this season is being imposed on them. With a lot of unhappy players, there may still be roadblocks ahead.

If people have health concerns with the WNBA playing in a bubble, imagine MLB traveling from city to city like they always do. And the WNBA only has to look after 141 players. To start the season, MLB will try to monitor 900 players – probably more during training camp. Since they are bubble-less, will people be roaming around mingling with the general public? On the road, teams can try to restrict player movement to only their hotel, team bus, and stadium. But how does management control their personnel when teams are at home? People getting COVID-19 is almost inevitable. The trick is preventing it from becoming an outbreak.

Jazmine Jones tweeted that she was "Off to NY this morning." Are teams starting camp outside the bubble in their home cities before going to Bradenton? Otherwise, it would be weird for Jones to fly from Tallahassee to Bradenton via New York. Laughing

Yes. Camps are starting in the home cities for about 10 days. Looks like teams will leave for Bradenton between July 5-7.

That makes training camp almost a month long, which is twice the normal period. I guess it provides quarantine time in case someone tests positive. However, traveling to an additional location adds an element of risk. It also puts teams in a position where they have to create and enforce their own semi-bubble.

Well, that explains why Laimbeer felt like he was in the dark – because it’s true! It also means the players have a legitimate reason for waiting until today to make their decisions. We may actually have a rush of last minute opt-outs.

Also means the deadline isn't set in stone. We likely won't know full rosters until everyone gets on a plane to Bradenton.

The players actually wanted the Commissioner to "impose" the season because they didn't like aspects of the owners" proposal. MLB isn't in the clear, but neither is the WNBA. The new heights of daily cases of Covid-19 are certainly troubling. The safety of players and staff must be the top priority and none of the plans put forward so far seem to do that.

The NWSL starts this weekend and I am sure there will be lessons learned which will hopefully allow other leagues to start play by the end of July.

It's not just the deadline that isn't set in stone. Quite possible that everyone who remains on the rosters gets to Bradenton but then some take a look and immediately head back home. Everything ahead for the WNBA, the NBA, Major League Baseball, the NFL, college sports, etc.., seems to me uncertain and precarious.

In my view, it's all worth a try for those players, coaches, and staff who decide to opt in. I respect everyone's decision to do so or not to do so. I see it all as iffy and as remaining iffy right throughout.

https://www.cbssports.com/wnba/news/wnba-2020-season-what-we-know-about-the-leagues-plan-for-covid-19-testing-and-prevention/

WNBA PROTOCOLS
Pre-Florida:
Much like with the NBA's protocol, the players will be sent a medical history questionnaire to fill out. While we don't have a copy of the WNBA's version, the NBA's form asks, among other things, if they've ever had any COVID-19 symptoms, if they've been in contact with anyone who tested positive and if they have any risk factors that could make them more susceptible to the virus.

Doctors will review those questionnaires, and if they determine a player is "high-risk," they will be allowed to sit out the season while still collecting their full paycheck.

Prior to traveling to IMG, players are to be tested at least three times for COVID-19, and are required to quarantine at home for the week prior to their team's departure date, according to Mechelle Voepel of ESPN.
If a player tests positive during this process, they will not be allowed to travel with their team. Instead, they will have to follow additional quarantine and testing procedures before being cleared to join the group in the bubble.

Arrival in Florida:
Once teams arrive at IMG, they will be tested again, and then will be sent to their rooms to quarantine for four days.

All players and staff will be tested daily for the first two weeks, and after that will taper off slightly, with regular testing supplemented by temperature checks.

Procedure for a positive test:
If a player tests positive, they will be re-tested to confirm the diagnosis. Should the second test also come back positive, the player will be taken off campus to quarantine. All of the player's teammates, and the staff that interacted with them, would be subject to extra testing.

In order for a player to return to play following a positive test, they would have to follow CDC guidelines for recovery and undergo additional testing and cardiac screening. That process could take multiple weeks.

Prevention:
Regular testing and temperature checks will be vital in catching any positive cases early, before the virus is able to spread throughout a team or the entire bubble.

In addition, players and staff will be required to wear masks at all times, except during practices and games, when they are in their own rooms, eating meals and outside while practicing social distancing.

The league will also be limiting the number of people allowed in the bubble to just 12 players and six staff members for each team. That's just 18 people per team, far less than the 37 per team that the NBA is allowing. While fewer people should help keep everyone safe, allowing just six staff members will force teams to make some difficult decisions.

The NBA schedule has their ESPN games on Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays & Mondays with ABC televising games on Sundays. This leaves open Tuesdays & Sundays on ESPN(or ESPN2) for the WNBA. NBA games begin on Thursday, July 30.
