I probably shouldn't laugh. Especially that her name is Karen.
If a bunch of idiots learn something from her passing then maybe some good has come from it.

It’s okay to laugh. I know I did.

The "best economy ever" under trump and anti-socialist but they needed a gofundme to bury her...Bye Karen.

Stock up on these 9 healthy foods to boost your immune system during coronavirus, says doctor and dietitian

Quote:
3. Chickpeas
Chickpeas contain a lot of protein, an essential nutrient made of amino acids that help grow and repair the body’s tissues. It’s also involved in synthesizing and maintaining enzymes to keep our systems functioning properly, according to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

“Chickpeas are also packed with zinc, which helps the immune system control and regulate immune responses,” Emily Wunder, a dietitian and founder of the nutritious recipes site Healthier Taste, tells CNBC Make It.

Roasted chickpeas are great as a quick great snack or salad topper. Make sure they’re completely dry before roasting. Then add a few tablespoons of oil (vegetable, canola or grapeseed oil all work well) and bake at 400 degrees Fahrenheit, stirring halfway through until they’re crispy.

For a nice kick, Wunder suggests adding some salt and paprika. If you’re using canned chickpeas, she says you’ll want to rinse them thoroughly to cut down on sodium content.

Quote:
5. Garlic
“Not only is garlic full of flavor, but it’s packed with health benefits such as lowering blood pressure and reducing risk of heart disease,” according to Sarin. “Garlic’s immunity-boosting abilities come from its heavy concentration of sulfur-containing compounds, which can help fight off some infections.”

Garlic has been shown in the past to help ward off the common cold. In a 2001 study published in Advances in Therapy, participants who took garlic supplements were less likely to catch a cold. And those who did get infected recovered faster than participants in the placebo group.

It’s an easy vegetable to work into your diet, says Sarin. You can add to it anything — from pasta sauce and salad dressings to soups and stir-fry dishes. She suggests aiming to consume two to three cloves per day.

Quote:
9. Sunflower seeds
“Sunflower seeds are high in vitamin E, which works as an antioxidant and helps boosts the immune system,” says Wunder.

Small but mighty, just one ounce of dry-roasted sunflower seeds can give you 49% of your daily value of vitamin E, according to the NIH.

Line a baking pan with parchment paper and roast unshelled sunflower seeds at 300 degrees Fahrenheit until they’re lightly browned. Then add the seeds to your salad or toss them with roasted vegetables. You can also use raw seeds in place of pine nuts for some homemade pesto.

ok, look, you chickpea hater(s) . . . i, too, once hated chickpeas. but i fell in love with hummus, and the hummus recipe i found online hits the spot every time. when i make it for friends, they swear it's better than sabra (brand). seriously good stuff. so easy, and so much cheaper than buying it prepared. only hitch is you really do need a food processor. this recipe is without tahini, which some folks might say is heresy, but for some tahini's expensive and a deal-breaker. anyway, here's probably the best hummus recipe you could find. in fact, it's on my list of things to whip up in the kitchen today. i got some naan (bread) to make pita chips. try this before you give up on chickpeas. listen to sambista.

the "organic" is . . . aspirational.

Hummus without tahini
The absolute best hummus without tahini recipe. Its great for those who like hummus, but not with tahini. Many people don't like tahini, so this is a great recipe to make for them.

1 (15 oz) can of organic chickpeas (garbanzo beans), drained
4 tablespoons organic lemon juice
1/4 cup organic extra virgin olive oil
2 cloves crushed garlic
1/2 teaspoon sea salt
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon organic cayenne pepper

Blend all ingredients in a food processor until smooth.
Optional: Drizzle with olive oil and garnish with parsley.

this is from "the portugal resident," an english-language paper. portugal president marcelo rebelo de sousa, former academic and journalist, is beloved by most portuguese, far as i can tell. he's almost guaranteed another term in 2021, and he's 71 now.

i may have posted this story before, but when i was doing retirement recon in portugal in 2018, a cab was taking me to my rental apartment in cascais, a heavenly resort town 30 minutes outside lisbon. the cab stopped at my place, and the taxi driver (who spoke english, as many portuguese do) pointed and said, matter-of-factly, "there's the president." i saw this old guy walking toward us with another old guy. both were in swimming trunks. no bodyguards, nothing else. i said, "THE president of the COUNTRY?!" yeah, the cabbie said. he lives right down this street, he said, adding that the prez prefers cascais over the presidential palace. "he goes swimming right here every morning." awesome, i thought.

back to the point of my post, if you tortured trump, you'd never hear him say that about the banks. well, maybe you would. because he's a punk-ass bitch.

A bobblehead of Dr. Fauci will help pay to produce masks for health workers

Dr. Anthony Fauci has achieved a new level of fame for a scientist: He's getting his own bobblehead.

Fauci, the nation's top expert in infectious diseases, has long been celebrated in the medical world. But Fauci has gained a following beyond the medical world and evolved into a celebrity overnight thanks to his appearances at White House coronavirus briefings.

Now, the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is turning his friendly face into a bobblehead.

"Americans, including us, have fallen in love with Dr. Fauci and his simple and straightforward approach in giving us the facts and medical guidance that we need during these unprecedented times," museum co-founder and CEO Phil Sklar told CNN.

This is very sobering. The computer simulation shows you can walk into a cloud of microdroplets from someone that coughed in a poorly ventilated area 20+ minutes ago. I doubt cloth masks are effective enough to catch them although it would be interesting to redo that experiment with masks. It's also been theorized that the virus could be transmitted through the mucosa of the eye, and that probability has been lost in the furor over mask usage.

Okay. I’m literally laughing out loud at the ‘can-I-speak-to-the-manager-haircut’ line. I don’t have anything else good to say about it though.

The world knows that Fauci was laughing at what Trump said because it was funny. Right? It was a moment of levity. He was introducing the Secretary of State and said, ‘Or, as I like to call it, the deep state.’ I laughed at the exact same moment. It wasn’t a face palm. It’s not a face palm now because the internet says it was because that’s a politically useful ‘SPIN’ on the moment. Fauci was laughing again yesterday at some schoolboy teasing shit Trump was saying. Fake news is also viral.

Quote:
One possibility is a gene variation in the ACE2 gene. ACE2 is an enzyme that attaches to the outer surface of cells in the lungs, as well as the heart. In an article in Science magazine, Immunologist Dr. Philip Murphy of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases said that "variations in the ACE2 gene that alter the receptor could make it easier or harder for the virus to get into lung cells."

It is also possible that a critical ingredient produced by the body, known as surfactant, which better allows the lungs to expand and contract, becomes depleted in some patients infected with the coronavirus. If you think of your lungs as a sponge, surfactant would be the detergent which would make them soft and pliable. Without surfactant, however, your lung becomes stiff and hard to squeeze. It may be why some patients continue to struggle even on a breathing machine.

Another avenue being pursued is better understanding how your body's immune system responds to viruses and bacteria in the first place. In some young, healthy people, a very reactive immune system could lead to a massive inflammatory storm that could overwhelm the lungs and other organs. In those cases, it is not an aged or weakened immune system that is the problem -- it is one that works too well. Some front line clinicians have speculated that is why steroids, an immune system suppressant, seem to offer benefit in some people.

Not to belabor this tangential topic, but YEAH....one of the cool things about hummus is you can tailor it to your tastes. I also don't love tahini. But I've added interesting things like horseradish or sun-dried tomatoes. Possibilities are (nearly) endless.

"Zoonotic" diseases are ones that can/do jump natural species barriers.
Rabies and Lyme disease are 2 of the best known....one a virus, the other bacterial. HIV is believed to have originated between African primates and people who ate them.

Premier infuriated by Trump, says Canada helped US amid 9/11

Quote:
Newfoundland Premier Dwight Ball said one of the great lessons in humanity is that in times of crisis you don’t stop being human.

“To say that I’m infuriated by the recent actions of President Trump of the United States is an understatement,” Ball said. “I cannot believe for a second that in a time of crisis that President Trump would even think about banning key medical supplies to Canada.”

Ball noted that in 2001, more than 6,600 passengers descended on Gander, Newfoundland, a town of 10,000 without warning as more than 200 flights were diverted to Canada following the attacks on the United States.

Flight crews filled Gander’s hotels, so passengers were taken to schools, fire stations, church halls. The Canadian military flew in 5,000 cots. Stores donated blankets, coffee machines, barbecue grills. Locals gave passengers food, clothes, showers, toys and banks of phones to call home free of charge.

“Newfoundland and Labrador will never give up on humanity . We will not hesitate for one second if we had to repeat what we did on 9-11. We would do it again,” Ball said.
