Joseph Echols Lowery (born October 6, 1921-March 27, 2020)

Quote:
He once said he missed King and other civil rights activists who had died before him. But he felt that God was keeping him for a single cause: to address the injustices of the criminal justice system, particularly toward poor black men.

"It's the last facet here of racial oppression," Lowery once said of the American criminal justice system.

Joseph Echols Lowery was born in Huntsville, Alabama, on October 6, 1921. His father owned a small business, and his mother was a part-time schoolteacher. He married Evelyn Gibson in 1950. The couple had three daughters, and Lowery had two sons from a previous marriage.

His hometown was typical of Southern mill villages of the 1920s, where racial lines were well-defined and the Ku Klux Klan used cross burnings and other scare tactics against African-Americans.

Lowery said it was an encounter with a police officer at his father's sweets shop when he was 12 or 13 years old that triggered his desire to work as a civil rights activist.

Les Hunter - University of Loyola - Chicago star from 1963 championship team.

Quote:
Hunter helped Loyola — with four black starters — break down racial barriers and capture what remains the only NCAA Division I championship for an Illinois school by beating Cincinnati.

Quote:
Hunter then played a key role in the “Game of Change” victory against all-white Mississippi State in East Lansing, Michigan. The Maroons had to sneak out in darkness before an injunction preventing them from playing the integrated Ramblers could be served.

Kristin Tarry, of TCG Artist Management, confirmed the news of his death to USA TODAY Monday. She represented Benedict for the past 20-plus years.

He leaves behind his wife, Phoebe Scholfield, and sons, Freddie and Leopold.

"Emmerdale" co-star Vicki Michelle shared a tribute for Benedict on Twitter Sunday.

"Shocked to hear one of our most brilliant actors and kind lovely man Jay Benedict has passed. Married to my lovely friend Phoebe Scholfield," she tweeted along with a photo of her and Benedict. "My heart goes out to her and her family at this sad time"

What's with all the athletes dying? Seems like there has been a lot lately.

This makes me really sad. I'm not always on the side of police officers, even though I have a couple in my family. I've seen to many bad examples of officers.

I never met Officer Leath but I wish I had. Her eyes have so much kindness in them. And her smile, so big and beautiful. She just looks like someone who was eager to go out and make a difference in her city. It's just too bad that she will not get that chance. 😢

Quote:
“For so many of us, danger is a thing to be avoided,” Mayor Joe Hogsett said at a news conference Thursday afternoon at Eskenazi Hospital. “Not so for Officer Breann Leath. That’s because rather than turn away, Officer Leath turned toward the danger. She heard the call and she went bravely toward that which could do her harm. Because she knew if she didn’t, harm may come to others.”

Quote:
A graduate of Southport High School and a member of the U.S Army National Guard, Taylor said, Leath will be remembered as a dedicated public servant with a heart for the community.

“She is the example of the type of officer we want on this department,” Taylor said.

Quote:
Fellow officers described her as charismatic and caring. Her personality shined on social media, where she occasionally posted videos of herself in uniform lip-syncing and dancing and talked about singing karaoke.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/crime/2020/04/09/indianapolis-police-officer-is-shot/5124884002/

A friend always says it best:

Quote:
“She just always seen the good," Allen said. "She never judged me and she didn’t judge anybody."
Allen and Leath became friends at Southport High School, where they played on the basketball team together.

“In high school, I just got into the wrong crowd, but she was the one friend who stuck by my side and tried to keep me on the straight and narrow," said Allen.

Allen said when she got expelled, it was Leath who went to bat for her.

“I was too scared, but she took it upon herself and a week later, picked me up and I had the meeting with the principal and Breann was there and I walked in and it was me and Breann and they allowed me to go back," Allen recalled.

That year, the friends walked together at graduation.

“Breann wouldn’t let one of her friends fail. She was the type that wanted everybody to succeed and put herself second, always, to people she didn’t know," said Allen.

It was that selflessness that Leath carried Thursday, responding to a domestic violence call where she gave her life.

Leath had wanted to be a police officer since she was a little girl. Allen can hardly believe her friend is gone.

“It’s just hard 'cause she’s the one who doesn’t deserve it," Allen said. “She really was a good soul."

Actress Shirley Knight

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/22/theater/shirley-knight-dead.html?action=click&module=News&pgtype=Homepage

I adored her performance in "As Good As It Gets" as Helen Hunt's character's mother. The role was originally written for Betty White, but she turned it down because of the scene where the dog is dropped down the trash chute. As much as I love Betty White, I can't picture anyone but Knight in the role.
