As expected, Associate Head Coach Amy Mallon will take over as Drexel's head coach. She is the architect of Drexel's incredible defense and she's also heavily involved with recruiting as well. (This from the mod of the Drexel message board)

I have to wonder if there are any major openings coming down (Purdue, Auburn, etc.) or if athletic departments are going to stand pat in the midst of the losing NCAA revenues and the general crazy times.

Any talk of who the new Stanford assistant may be or candidates for that matter?

Nicole surprised me leaving University of Oregon for such a low level option like Grand Canyon, and now UC Riverside? She could of stuck around at U of O a few more years and gone to a BCS as a head coach.

That's one path, certainly ...
But I think the experience of being a head coach is really important, and it's much different than being even a top-level assistant. (There's a great movie about backup singers called "20 Feet from Stardom" and in it Bruce Springsteen says "It's not far, but it's a long walk" to center stage, and it's true of coaching too.)
I know high school is different, but I had been an assistant for high-level programs for almost 10 years before I became a head coach, and I made a bunch of errors early on -- luckily I was at a small school and the level of competition allowed me to learn without being punished too harshly.
For Powell, she made some mistakes, I'm sure, at Grand Canyon, and she has a couple more to make at Riverside, but my feeling is she'll be much more prepared for a Power 5 head coaching job than an assistant who's never had to run the whole show.
Of course, others have taken that path and been successful, so one size does not fit all.

Well that's going to be a difficult adjustment. Husband coaches there still, daughters are on the team still. |

Addie Jo Conradt retired early after going .516/.406 in her final two seasons.
Gail Goestenkors got fired after going .614/.488 in five seasons.
Karen Aston gets fired after improving the records of these two coaching legends to .689/.646 in eight seasons.
I'm not sure whom UT can hire to confidently improve on this record, especially with Mothra Mulkey in the conference. The grass is always hypothetically greener on the hypothetical other side of the fence. |
