Kobe Bryant to Be Remembered at Oscars Ceremony

Quote:
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences is planning to acknowledge the death of the late basketball legend Kobe Bryant at the 2020 Oscars ceremony on Feb. 9, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.

Although Bryant's basketball accomplishments overshadowed his film efforts, he was an Oscar winner for his five-minute autobiographical short film Dear Basketball. The Laker great wrote, executive produced and lent his voice to the project, which won best animated short at the 2018 ceremony.

Vanessa Bryant Trying to ‘Be the Strong One’ for Daughters After Kobe Bryant and Gianna's Deaths

Quote:
Another insider tells PEOPLE that, as expected, Vanessa is “devastated.”

“She can hardly keep it together,” the insider says. “She can’t finish a sentence without crying. But she is working very hard to pull it together for the other girls. She now has to be the strong one.”

Heartbreaking. Joe Bryant was one of the best people I met during the time I was covering the Sparks.

I want everyone here to know I cried pretty much all day Sunday. (Or all of you who remember my thoughts and feelings on Kobe.)

Wasn’t their falling out over him getting married to Vanessa, G?

Never mind. Not my business.

What's the energy in LA right now?

Subdued right now. Sunday was one of those days though that you only experience with a certain combination of things. Young death of an icon to a place who is also a true world icon and as it happens and is taken by the public in that place. Think Michael Jackson’s death. The difference is how young Kobe was. And we just had a warm up act to this with Nipsey Hustle’s death.

We didn’t get out till after 4 sometime and did our usual Sunday thing of driving up to Thai Town in Hollywood to eat. We go up Sunset. There were some big parties along the way because of the Grammys. A black couple all dressed up jay walked across Sunset and the girl was lit up and yelling, “Ko-be! Ko-be!” But the overall vibe in the air again is young death. It’s such a unique thing to experience that in a major city.

Yesterday and today things seemed to be much more subdued, like a pause, but this city is going to be building towards an expression of grief and celebration of Kobe that will be unprecedented. The shock and the grief of this has absolutely no precedent here. Think Elvis dying. And you know we’re not ever really going backwards in terms of the intensity or size of public events such as this. Michael Jackson’s memorial service was at Staples with a massive crowd outside. Somehow some way this will be bigger.

Given that he was an Oscar winner, it isn't much of a news story that he would be remembered in the In Memoriam segment.

76ers honor Kobe Bryant as tributes continue worldwide

Quote:
Philadelphia guard Ben Simmons raced out of the locker room, donning those same numbers, as well as "MAMBA FOREVER" and "R.I.P. GIGI" on his sneakers in black marker. Forward Tobias Harris had similar messages on his, "Rest in Peace Kobe" on his right shoe and "Rest in Peace GiGi" on his left.

"I was a Lakers fan," Harris said pregame. "Modeling his work ethic inspired my game. When I got to the league, I played against him., we had a couple of conversations in games.

"That, for me, was like a dream come true.

Also. I’m not able to really confirm this but I think 9 dead in one crash might make this the deadliest air disaster in the US in quite some time. Maybe someone can do better research than me.

The last one I found with more fatalities was Comair Flight 5191 in 2006 in Kentucky

Wow. A pretty important tidbit we’re not getting from the news. Side note: Domestic air travel has gotten so much safer.

Eyewitness says Kobe Bryant’s pilot was circling ‘aggressively’ before crash; Aviation expert: ‘This was totally irresponsible’

Quote:
An eyewitness says Kobe Bryant's pilot, Ara Zobayan, 50, was flying in a circle "aggressively," about 30 minutes before the helicopter crashed into a mountain above Calabasas, California.

Quote:
Robert Ditchey, a veteran pilot, aeronautical engineer and former airline executive, told USA Today that the crash was "totally avoidable".

"And on the part of some people I can go as far as to say irresponsible," Ditchey said.

Aviation experts who studied the helicopter's bizarre flight path and weather maps observed that the pilot flew away from the airport and he had enough visibility to see the hills before he flew into them.

Aviation officials and law enforcement officials are reportedly investigating whether Zobayan was suicidal at the time of the crash.

Quote:
Flight tracking data shows the pilot flying erratically up, down, sideways, up then rapidly descending 1,700 feet.

The helicopter was flying at 184mph and descending at a rate of 4,000 feet per minute when it struck the hillside, according to Flightradar24.

The rapid ascents and descents would have sparked terror among the passengers.

At the time of the crash, the fog ceiling was about 1,300 feet above ground with a visibility of 5 miles. The pilots believe Zobayan would have seen the mountain before he flew into it.
