Obama offers emotional tribute to Kobe Bryant in NBA remarks: 'Nothing is more heartbreaking'

Quote:
Washington (CNN)Former President Barack Obama on Saturday offered an emotional tribute to NBA legend Kobe Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter who died in a helicopter crash last month, asserting that "nothing is more heartbreaking" as a parent himself.

Speaking at the NBA All-Star Weekend Newsmaker Brunch, Obama struck a somber tone addressing not only the death of Kobe and Gianna Bryant, but also that of former longtime NBA commissioner David Stern, who died earlier this year of a brain hemorrhage.

"That loss is something I know many are still grappling with. Particularly Kobe, because he was with his daughter and those families and those children and those of us who have had the joy and privilege of being parents and taking kids to ball games and then rooting for our children and seeing our dreams and hopes passed on to them. Nothing is more heartbreaking," Obama said.
"And so I want to offer the NBA family Michelle and my deepest condolences and obviously the families of the Sterns and the Bryants," he added.

Okay, so this a garden for cremated remains. I should have thought of that. So very fortunate not to have any modern experiences in this area.

Still such a gut punch.

Or maybe not.

Designer casket honoring Kobe Bryant is ‘nothing people have ever seen’

Quote:
ELIZABETHTOWN, N.C. — Last week, casketmaker Fletcher Collins loaded a customized tribute memorial into a rented van before he and a couple of friends drove cross-country from his business in North Carolina's Mount Olive community of Elizabethtown to Los Angeles.

Collins’ destination over the roughly 2,260-mile trip is a public memorial service being held Monday for basketball legend Kobe Bryant and his daughter, Gianna “Gigi,” at the Staples Center, nearly a month after their deaths in a Jan. 26 helicopter crash in California.

There, in front of the center on Tuesday, he unveiled to the public what he calls his masterpiece, the “Staples Center,” which he dedicates to the families of Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter and the seven other people killed in the accident.

A number of celebrities and athletes are expected to be on hand, including members of the Lakers and the Clippers, and former N.B.A. stars like Shaquille O’Neal and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the league’s career leading scorer. Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors and Luka Doncic of the Dallas Mavericks are among the current players who have said they will attend, along with Luke Walton, a Lakers teammate of Bryant’s who now coaches the Sacramento Kings.

Sabrina Ionescu, a guard for the University of Oregon women’s basketball team, told the Pac-12 Network that she was among those who had been invited to speak. Ionescu had grown close to Bryant, a vocal advocate for women’s sports in recent years, and to Gianna, who had dreamed of playing in the W.N.B.A.

Quote:
Players from the N.H.L.’s Los Angeles Kings and the W.N.B.A.’s Los Angeles Sparks will also attend the memorial, Zeidman said. The Kings and the Sparks play their home games at Staples Center, and both hang their various championship banners not far from those that Bryant helped win for the Lakers.

So I have a question. They showed Joe Bryant multiple times during the service. Was that Kobe’s mom sitting beside him? Joe hasn’t aged at all. They both look really young.

Yes. That was Kobe's mom, Pam, sitting next to Joe.

Vanessa Bryant sues helicopter company for deaths

Quote:
The wrongful death lawsuit filed by Vanessa Bryant in Los Angeles Superior Court on Monday said the pilot was careless and negligent by flying in cloudy conditions Jan. 26 and should have aborted the flight that killed all nine people aboard.

The lawsuit names Island Express Helicopters Inc. and also targets pilot Ara Zobayan's representative or successor, listed only as "Doe 1" until a name can be determined.

Reuters more clearly states, at least to me, that they are sueing the pilot’s heirs or his estate.

The wife is looking for punishment but it seems like the only guy who deserves punishment is dead. He was supposed to maintain at least 1/2 mile visibility (and I highly doubt the company would have told him not to follow that “special VFR” rule) but chose to only slow down to about 115mph from 150mph as he flew over rising hilly terrain following a road that was curving through the hills on a day when the cloud cover was 1100 feet above the ground in the valley.
