Northern Iowa 21-16 at the end of the 1st qtr.

This is the best game of the day, and these two teams may be the two best after South Dakota here in Las Vegas. I am already looking forward to Ohio St - NIU tomorrow.

Alabama 33-29 midway through the 2nd qtr.

The Crimson Tide have used their superior size and athleticism to seize the lead.

I must be going a little crazy. I'm pretty sure I posted that Alabama led 46-43 at the half, but maybe I posted it in the wrong thread.

Anyway, Alabama extended the lead to 55-45 and now leads 60-50 with 4 minutes left in the third.

Alabama 72 NIU 57 End of 3

Northern Iowa looked sluggish in the 3rd, missing some easy shots and a step slow. Maybe they aren't used to the time, but more likely they have been worn down by The Tide. Unless NIU makes a run I will head out early.

Tomorrow's games

11 am Detroit Mercy - Tennessee Tech
1:15. Northern Illinois - South Dakota
3:30 Nebraska - Sacred Heart
5:45. Ohio St - Northern Iowa
8:00. Alabama - USC

It occurs to me that I referred to Northern Iowa as NIU when they are actually UNI. In the word of Rick Perry, oops.

Alabama 77 -65 with 4:52 to go, Northern Iowa at the line

It occurs to me I referred to the Panthers as NIU instead of UNI. In the word of Rick Perry, oops.

Back at South Point for day 2. I arrived a little later because I expected a blowout in game 1. When I arrived at the end of the 3rd it was:

Tennessee Tech 61 Detroit Mercy 34. Now more than 3 1/2 minutes into the 4th it is 61-35

Tennessee Tech 69 Detroit Mercy 47 FINAL

Detroit is quite simply bad. Bridgette Fox is thieir best, but this is a team that will struggle to win anywhere. Tennessee Tech showed some shooting ability yesterday and may have done do again in the first 3 quarters, but it was sub time in the 4th .

Next up is South Dakota and Northern Illinois. The Coyotes shouldn't have too much trouble but I wouldn't be surprised if the game is close at the half. NIU presents different problems than Ohio St and I suspect they could struggle early.

I guess I was wrong. No sluggish start.

South Dakota up 16-2 less than 4 minutes in. 4-4 from 3 point range. This could be ugly. I would advise the SDU coach to get Duffy out and not risk any injury Very Happy

South Dakota 21-10 End of 1

The Yotes were as cold in the last 6 minutes as they were hot to start the game. NIU hit a few 3s but then fell in love with the shot. Bad move

South Dakota certainly likes the first 4 minutes of a quarter.

USD 37 NIU13

That is 16-3 in the second after 16-2 in the 1st

USD 52 NIU 23 HALF

Since I don't have stats I am guessing, but I believe USD Had 11 3s in the 1st half, not counting a 35 footer hit just after the buzzer.

This game has gotten ugly. USD continues to play solid and NIUis confused and out classed, probably thinking about their flight home.

USD 63 NIU 27. 4:44 3RD

USD 91 NIU 48 FINAL

Ciara Duffy was one 5 South Dakota players to have at least 3 3 pointers.

Hard to get excited about this game. Nebraska is physically bigger and better . Sacred Heart doesn't shoot well.. I don't think Nebraska (abbreviated GBR on the scoreboard) will win by 40 because they don't have the same killer spirit that USD had in the last game, but they would if they played 40 solid minutes.

Nebraska 19-7 after 1 qtr, and has extended the lead to 27-9, 3 minutes into the second.

Back from an early dinner. A little trouble with the internet here, but Ohio St is controlling the game against Northern Iowa. UNI needs to play perfectly to stay with OSU, and quite frankly they haven't. The Buckeyes lead 34-16 at the half. UNI looks dispirited.

In all honesty today has been a bad day of women's basketball so far. Each game has been controlled early by a superior team. Northern Iowa has been much worse than I expected. Ohio St has played better today, but perhaps it is just a tribute to how good South Dakota is. Yesterday I believed Alabama was the second best team here but now I will reserve judgment until I see how the Tide does against USC.

It could be that only South Dakota will get an NCAA bid out of this group, but I could see Bama, Ohio St and maybe even USC and Nebraska getting on or close to the bubble.

Ohio St 64 Northern Iowa 46 FINAL

Northern Iowa actually cut the lead to 9 with less than 2 minutes to go but OSU closed out the game with 3 consecutive 3 pointers. The 4th noncompetitive game of the day.

Hopefully the nightcap between USC and Alabama will be a nail biter.

Alabama 13 USC 12 3 minutes to go in the first.

Decent start to the game, but Bama doesn't look as good tonight

USC 28-22 at the half.

Each team had 11 turnovers. There was no technique in defensive rebounding, leading to 14 offensive rebounds (40%). And the teams combined to shoot 31% from the floor. Alabama looks like they have more upside than USC, but neither team is distinguishing itself tonight.
