This is going to be an up and down year for ND, and this was definitely an "up" game for them. At one point in the game (mid 2nd quarter, I think) ND even had the edge in rebounding, as amazing as that sounds.

I'm glad they were able to come out of the event with at least one win.

ND's schedule isn't really good for an extremely young team (you can tell, as McGraw said, that she made it assuming Jackie Young would be returning): Mich. St., Tennessee, Michigan, SDSU, FGCU, USF, UConn, and DePaul is a really rough road for such a young team, but they'll eventually end up the better for it.

We have been having a discussion on ND's roster situation over on ND Nation, and after discussing it, I realized something. If you asked me (or pretty much any ND fan) who would be playing for ND right now, there would be 5 players who are not currently playing (one should be back in a few weeks. Another is still on the team, but who knows when she'll be able to come back). That's 5 in addition to the 4 seniors who were graduating. The five are Jackie Young, Danielle Patterson, Jordon Nixon, Abby Prohaska, and Mikayla Vaughn.

It's one thing to say graduation is a fact of the sport and transfers and injuries happen, but so much in such a short time is a lot to handle. Getting Vaughn back will help a lot, both offensively, defensively, and with rebounding.

The question is how effective will Vaughn be once she returns? Although, I suppose even at 50% she will be better than the alternative.
