For Diana Taurasi and Sue Bird, life in the WNBA paled in comparison to the lavish treatment they received in Russian professional basketball, courtesy of their team owner and benefactor, Shabtai Kalmanovich. Kalmanovich spoiled his stars, showering them with expensive gifts, luxury hotels, and private concerts, but he was a man with a complicated past. Taurasi and Bird had long heard stories about his history as a KGB spy and links to organized crime, but Kalmanovich’s murder in 2009 forced them to reckon with the complicated legacy of the man they had come to love.
Key Interviews include Diana Taurasi, Sue Bird, Kalmanovich’s widow Anna Arkhipova, Russian organized crime reporter Kirill Belyaninov |

I'm wondering if any footage of Lauren Jackson will be in that episode. IIRC, she actually flew over to attend the Kalmanovitch's funeral services, and was shown uncontrollably sobbing.

For me that is always the issue with podcasts. Just don't want to take the time to listen to long interviews. I'd rather read an article - where I can decide after a few minutes if it is worth finishing, or often get to the part I'm interested in quickly.

I liked it even though it rehashed a news article from a few years back.
LJ is only mentioned in passing. In the pre jobs article I referenced, it stated she was deeply shook up by his passing.
She and Diana are chiefly interviewed but we also get some great thoughts from Shabtais widow, Anna Arkipova, who was a Russian star player.

DIANA TAURASI: And I go over to one of my Russian teammates and I go you know, who could have done this? And she goes, the person who killed him is probably here now, and then she just moved on to the next conversation. That that just like was bizarre to me. But that’s… Russia is a different world. |
Didn't hear the podcast but that transcript was a good read. It's like watching a film.
