Thanks to Matt who set up the spreadsheet for this year:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1M5sMuRl4oIkZxA4NXIXC2ntjfphLv0Cdntroz0rPN1w/edit#gid=388284897

Current Rules

- Head to Head (H2H) instead of cumulative (see schedule in 2nd post)
- 12 player roster (drafting info in 3rd post below)
- 8 player weekly active players as in 2G, 2F, 1C or TF, and 3U.
- each active player shall have only one game count in any particular timeframe. You can choose which one of their games to count.
- a player's position shall be whatever is listed on the team's website. If a team website uses the designations Post or Wing, they shall be construed as follows: P = F/C and W = G/F. a TF is any F who is over 6’2”. A U can be any player
- we are playing without an IR since we have 4 inactive players at any time
- stats count only for starting lineup players (bench player stats don't count)
- owners must post their weekly lineup in this thread - bench players' stats don't count for your team so this is REALLY important. You can post week by week, for the month, or for a whole season. Please post clearly player name, school, conference and the position at which you are playing them as well as the date of the game you wish to count. Lineups must be posted before your games start for the week, but you can change out a player from your lineup if they do not play in their designated game so long as you have a legal inactive player who has games left in the given time period.
- In the case that a team doesn't put in a lineup, the lineup from the prior week will be used and the first game will be used for each player. edit: that lineup will be set and cannot change once the first player on the lineup starts her game. Exception would be if one of the players does not have a game that week, in which case she can be replaced.
- games counted are only against D1 opponents.
- scoring determined by pts, reb, ast, steals, blk, 3's-made, 3pt%, FG%, FT%, & TOs. To win any week’s matchup you must win more categories than your opponent for that week. Ties are possible and will be scored as such
- player eligibility is Division I only (no DivII, DivIII, or intramural players)
- open free agency - first to the punch wins
- transaction limits:
- two transactions in a calender week (runs from 12 am Tuesday to 12 am following Tuesday Eastern time - this is Monday midnight). In addition to add/subtract, you may trade a player or players to another fantasizer which would count as one transaction. You may freely make transactions until the games start Nov 5.
- trade/transaction deadline: Feb 11
- live draft will have snake format (the last team to draft in the first round will draft first in the second round and so forth)
- players can be drafted only once by only one team (two different teams cannot have the same player)
- we may work out a play off system at the end of the season

This is the thread from year before, with rules & regs: http://boards.rebkell.net/viewtopic.php?t=92695

And this the final standings: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1MZ-36a9nvH1h2jChJAlZCKuizDWtmNG8mYYY92BTvbQ/edit?pli=1#gid=0

So this is how I would propose we incorporate the 9th player. The first and 8th week will be one additional H2H but everybody has one week where they play 2 opponents and everybody plays each other once per cycle. I tried a more complex way, but came back to this...unless someone else has a brighter idea.

wk 1: Nov 5 - Nov 11
This week P1, 5,and 9 all have two opponents.
P1 v P5
P2 v P6
P3 v P7
P4 v P8
p9 v p1
p9 v p5

wk 2: Nov 12 - Nov 18
This week P6 plays two opponents
P1 v P6
P2 v P7
P3 v P8
P4 v P5
p9 v p6

wk 3: Nov 19 - 25
This week P7 plays 2 opponents
P1 v P7
P2 v P8
P3 v P5
P4 v P6
p9 v p7

wk 4: Nov 26 - Dec 2
This week P8 plays 2 opponents
P1 v P8
P2 v P5
P3 v P6
P4 v P7
p9 v p8

period 5: Dec 3 - Dec 16 (two weeks)
This week P2 plays 2 opponents
P1 v P2
P3 v P4
P5 v P6
P7 v P8
p9 v p2

period 6: Dec 17 - 30 (two weeks)
This week P3 plays 2 opponents
P1 v P3
P2 v P4
P5 v P7
P6 v P8
p9 v p3

wk 7: Dec 31 - Jan 6
This week P4 plays 2 opponents
P1 v P4
P2 v P3
P5 v P8
P6 v P7

I think this or some variant thereof is a good idea. I'd be up for it.

The daily lineups is just too much too manage over the long college season (especially when myrtle always has the title wrapped up by January lol) and I can't even speak to the incredible effort to compile the results.

Yeah, not even Meg Gustafon’s wonder season can stop the Miraclez.

There is something to be said about being engaged week in and week out. It’d be cool if it wasn’t a cumulative standing, but let’s say you played someone every week throughout the season and if you won the most points, you’d win the matchup or something.

That way we could even have a playoff system at the end of the season, where after six weeks of being inactive, I can swoop in and slay.

great! Hope a couple more join us too! 8-10 is a good number. Also if someone wants to join but thinks they will be gone or unavailable for part of the season, it worked out fine in the W game to have co-managers, so just find someone willing to work with you.

I don't think I can manage a weekly type head-to-head contest but if someone else wants to do the work, we could change it that much. Perhaps something in-between could work...like make it monthly? So start over at zero at the first of each month. Then maybe have a playoff of some kind at the end for the monthly winners.

And we have to think about when to draft. First games are Nov 5 so coming up faster than usual. Perhaps we start a rolling draft on Friday the 25th, then set a time on Sunday the 3rd to finish it off if we haven't finished by then? We can find someone not playing to pull names to give us the order for the draft.

In looking at schedules, the one game per week looks like it would be difficult to do since especially in preseason, teams play anywhere from zero to four games in a week. Any ideas?

I don’t know if you’ve ever played on sports ws..

But they have a game last certain time period til all players on tm have played 1 gm..

So how about 2 week period? I wonder is that long enough for players get 1 gm in here

Good idea, but maybe use two games in two week period. I think that would take care of most issues since it seems like schedules are often a zero or one game week followed by a two or three game week. If your player doesn't play two games in the two week period, then use one of your subs instead. I hate to downsize the game too much. If everybody plays the first couple of days in the time frame, it takes away some of the fun while we hang out waiting for the next period. And maybe we play 8 players instead of 7. That way we use more of our roster while overall still playing a lot fewer games. Essentially it means most players will get 17 counting games instead of 29 or 30.

What do you others think? Or we could play the old way, which requires daily rosters but includes a lot more games since you can play all ten of your players on a regular basis and most of them will get 29 or 30 games.

And would you like for it to be a monthly contest instead of the whole year? If so, I would divide it up into 4 - 4 week periods that more or less correspond with the months.

If you have preferences, let us know!

I agree with Matt. I would be in if we can come up with a streamlined game. Head-to head matchups (as opposed to season long totals) would be my preference. I would also suggest that we go with 1 game per week for each player, but it might be interesting to be able to choose the individual game that counts, in advance.

We could go with a larger team size (15 person roster with 10 players each week) given that there are 350 teams. And we would have to make some decision on positions since this is even more sketchy in college.

I will be out of the country for a few weeks in January, but otherwise I would be happy to help on the record keeping.

I think the problem weeks are pretty much just going to be in December (finals and Christmas), so my thought is we could just expand the week to cover 2 weeks there...and the players and scorekeepers can have a bit of a holiday break as well. There might be an occasional outlier otherwise but so long as every player on your roster isn't playing every week, it's probably fine and could be a consideration when drafting.

Seems like we have 8 so far, so H2H 14-week double round robin could work well if we want to go that route, e.g.:
Week 1: 11/5 - 11/10
Week 2: 11/11 - 11/17
Week 3: 11/18 - 11/24
Week 4: 11/25 - 12/1
Week 5: 12/2 - 12/15
Week 6: 12/16 - 12/29
Week 7: 12/30 - 1/5
--
Week 8: 1/6 - 1/12
Week 9: 1/13 - 1/19
Week 10: 1/20 - 1/26
Week 11: 1/27 - 2/2
Week 12: 2/3 - 2/9
Week 13: 2/10 - 2/16
Week 14: 2/17 - 2/23
--
Week 15 (Smackdown between the Miracles and ??? for the title): 2/24 - 3/1

I don't think H2H is any harder to manage. We can set the matchups in a spreadsheet in advance and then the rest should just be results entry. I might not be able to reliably compile the results throughout the season, but I can setup a google sheet if needed.

We might need to refine the scoring system though (not sure what was used in the WNBA game and your opinions of it?).

I also like Cal's idea about choosing the games each week - would add a fun layer of strategy and pain when you choose oh so wrong.

Not really married to these or any particular ideas, but definitely prefer weekly management vs daily.

If Matt can set up a Google Sheet like the one we used before where all I have to do is find the game and do a copy paste of the stat line of the appropriate player, I'm willing to do whatever way the rest of you prefer.
[Matt, you can look at the 'split' sheets in the google doc to see how the data is currently parsed and we can PM or email with other questions] Doing the initial setup is always a pain for me.

My only strong preference is that we use all 10 categories rather than a dumbed down version. I think that's part of the fun - seeing how to balance out your team so if you have someone great in three categories but horrible in two, then finding the right player to balance them out. The question would be how to give value to the percentages. Is it simply that you win or lose each category...in which case it would be fairly easy to tie, so we would have to create a tiebreaker. I guess we could also just use a Euro style game where you get 2 pts for a win, 1 pt for a tie, and 0 for a loss?

So let me summarize what I think people want:
1)H2H rather than cumulative with schedule like Matt laid out except I would like the weeks to be Tuesday thru Monday;
2)One game per player per week - we get to pick which game;

3)Number of players is a question - I still like a roster of 10 with 8 played, and you have to play at least one C, 2Fs, 2Gs and the other three can be anything.

As an aside: I know positions can be sketchy but again I think that's part of the balance thingie. [We used to let people petition to call a player something other than how they are listed, but one person badly abused it so I'm not inclined to allow it again.]

We have to decide how to handle it if more people want to join...as that will make the H2H more lopsided.

BTW: I thought we could ask Howee to draw names to create the draft order if nobody has an objection to that.

So, I threw together a draft sheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1M5sMuRl4oIkZxA4NXIXC2ntjfphLv0Cdntroz0rPN1w/edit?usp=sharing

Basically, there are 3 new tabs at the front to calculate the results and standings, but the data entry and stat parsing is completely re-used from the old sheet. Obviously it needs to be cleaned up and will require further changes once we finalize the number of players, etc.

Used some of the old season's data to simulate the results for this format (basically first 8 entries for week 1 and so on...) and indeed there are a lot of ties - I think it was 10/56 (~18%). So it'd probably be best to come up with some sort of tiebreaker, though it's a bit tricky because there can also be ties in each of the categories themselves.

Tuesday-Monday makes sense for when teams have their weekend game re-scheduled for Monday night TV, I think. Don't really see any downsides to that if it's not too confusing for people.

The position logic is fine for fantasy purposes I think. On the roster size, I think a slightly larger roster would be easier to manage and give more flexibility to match up with a particular opponent, but on the other hand, you might end up with players sitting on the bench all season and I assume we will have similar transaction rules as before so it might be unnecessary. I'm good with whatever.

Nice work. Thanks! looks good with a cursory look over. One question is I noticed some match ups ended as 5 to 4 so wondering where the other category went or maybe a little glitch? If there is a tie within a category on the weekly H2H, just give them both 1/2 point?

Choices about ties:
1) add a third column with W-L-Tie and perhaps a running over-under so a win of 7-3 would show a +4 for the winner and a -4 for the loser and this could be used for an overall tie breaker.

2) add a category or subtract a category so a tie on the H2H can't happen. My choices would be: a) for an add, fouls. we used to do this one but there's a bit of unfairness to it in that some players get a whole spate of intentional fouls in the last two minutes. and b) for a subtract, maybe 3% since if they are really bad it will already show up in FG%.

roster choices:

1: 10 players on roster and play 8 of them: 1 C, 2 Fs, 2 Gs, and 3 anything (call them utilities.

2: 12 players on roster and still play just 8

3: 12 or 13 players on roster and play 10. I would then propose 1 C, 3 Fs, 3 Gs, and 3 utility. We could make it two full rosters but usually C's are harder to come by so I'm thinking we just stick to one C.

and yes, I think we will still have at least one IR and still be able to make weekly drop/adds, probably as before. I'll look up the old rule and post that above once we decide all the rules.

H2H

I thought once Howee picks a draft order we will use that to determine the H2H's as well. So the player that drafts first is player 1, the second to draft is player 2, etc...

Then we could predetermine the matchups as follows.
wk 1: Nov 5 - Nov 11
P1 v P5
P2 v P6
P3 v P7
P4 v P8

wk 2: Nov 12 - Nov 18
P1 v P6
P2 v P7
P3 v P8
P4 v P5

wk 3: Nov 19 - 25
P1 v P7
P2 v P8
P3 v P5
P4 v P6

wk 4: Nov 26 - Dec 2
P1 v P8
P2 v P5
P3 v P6
P4 v P7

period 5: Dec 3 - Dec 16 (two weeks)
P1 v P2
P3 v P4
P5 v P6
P7 v P8

period 6: Dec 17 - 30 (two weeks)
P1 v P3
P2 v P4
P5 v P7
P6 v P8

wk 7: Dec 31 - Jan 6
P1 v P4
P2 v P3
P5 v P8
P6 v P7

then start over again.

Yeah, I think it was just giving neither team a point if a category tied (and maybe giving both a point if TOs tied...rough draft lol) - doesn't really affect the result but that can be easily changed to 1/2 for each for clarity sake.

I generally prefer if the ties get resolved, but the problem with adding/subtracting a category is that if there is a tie in one category (like in these cases you mention), then you can now get games ending 5.5 - 5.5 or whatever. Not really sure how to get around that without doing something more complicated.

I do agree with the blind draw and your schedule seems fine.

Is everyone else still playing? The peanut gallery is quiet lol.

I am fine with the rules. But to clarify my suggestion is the game is picked when the roster for the week is put in place. If we are going to go with 8 player lineups, I would suggest 12 total on the roster to allow for injuries and scheduling. There would still be a large pool of remaining players for adds/drops. Finally, I would also suggest that a single position be declared at the time of the draft (or pickup) and that position be among those listed on their college website at that time.

We can easily go to 10 teams, even if that would not allow for a full double round-robin schedule. I hope we could start the draft soon so it can be finished by November 3.

And I think that Howie is a good choice as someone to draw the draft order, although I was planning to ask him to submit my lineups while I'm away.

Don't sell yourself short. One of the advantages of head-to-head matchups is that a bad start won't necessarily doom you. And with the number of available players, improving your team throughout the season can be done, even if you have some injuries.
