It all comes back to the same old problem with the award itself. They really need to change it to "most outstanding player" rather than "most valuable". Voters seem to think that "valuable" means "use whatever criteria I want to justify my ridiculous hot take".

I don't think they would think any differently if it was "outstanding."

I disagree. The mental gymnastics I always hear comes from "yes player X was better this season than player Y, but player Y was more 'valuable' to their team than player X".

This line of reasoning doesn't work with outstanding. You take that "value" quotient out, and now the debate is about who was the best. Yes, we can still have people arguing about what stats or play constitutes "the best", but it becomes much harder to rationalize some of these other takes.

There's also nothing to stop them having both. Why not let people vote that Delle Donne was the best player in the league this season, but that Chicago without Vandersloot or Seattle without Howard would've fallen to bits to a greater extent than Washington without EDD?

Are we forgetting that Washington didn't win a single game without Delle Donne? Wink

There would also, of course, be nothing to stop people voting the same player as both. Wink

I told y'all Sloot was the Wild Card towards unanimity. There was no making a case to put anyone ahead of EDD based on the traditional MVP signifiers. You can make a case that Sloot, in her own way, is as valuable to her team as anybody.

Or it's just 2 petty Sky fans? Laughing

Probably those two voters were dead. It is Chicago, you know.

Yeah, I would have not have an issue with this.

Part of why I bristle with the "player x was more valuable than y to their team" reasoning is that beyond the voting process, MVP ceases to be used in this way ever again. In future conversations, including Hall of Fame discussions, it is exclusively used to mean "this player was the best player in the league that season".

Clearly Angel would win it every year she plays then. Laughing

All that's left is the All WNBA teams and the Finals MVP

Given that Vandersloot is the only actual guard who got more than 7 points in the MVP voting, there could be some epic fudging on the All-WNBA teams. At the very least, someone like McBride or DeShields could make it at 'guard', and I wouldn't be hugely surprised if they put Delle Donne or Bonner there.

Washington lost every game EDD didn't play. She was the best and most valuable player this year.

Respect to EDD, but those three games the Mystics lost while she was out were against the Sun, Mercury, & Aces.

Those are three playoff teams with two title contenders. Laughing

Toliver only played 23 games, relatively easy omission.

Jones was the Sun’s All Star, so it’s makes sense that she makes the All WNBA team over C. Williams.

Mercury were an 8th seed, hard to see two players making All WNBA unless they both have historic seasons.

it's laughable that they slid J Jones over to a forward spot so Cambage could make the team. DeShields gets a guard spot despite mostly playing SF.

Bria Holmes was a great pickup for the Sun. They really needed some athleticism off the bench.

Could have simply voted for Cambage as a Point Guard, cause she's one now. Laughing Laughing

I'd like to know the three people who didn't vote for Howard, Nneka, and JJ on either their first or second team. Shocked
