I think the WNBA would keep a team in NY or LA running for a while, but I really don't think they would consider a franchise that has failed to gain traction in Atlanta important enough to do so.

Maybe, maybe not. I do think that a case could be made that it's important to the continued growth and health of women's basketball in the southeast for there to be a pro women's team in the region, and Atlanta is all they've got. And you talk about the Dream not "gaining traction," but what are the chances that any other city in the southeast would do better?

Also, it's not a coincidence that teams in Chicago and Atlanta were added around the time that ESPN started feeding a meaningful amount of money into the league. Teams were wanted in those places, rather than just being random cities where an owner was willing to support a team. So it would be a question of whether the people/companies that wanted them there in the first place were willing to give up on the idea.

I think there's enough there to keep them alive in Atlanta, one way or another.

Can you give more details about what went on in Atlanta and Chicago to get a team there?
