“Last night is an image of where the WNBA is headed if you all don’t fix it.”
Liz Cambage’s words after the fight that broke out between the Dallas Wings and the Phoenix Mercury at Talking Stick Resort Arena on Saturday night echo a growing sentiment among WNBA circles. Players and coaches have been bemoaning the dearth of foul calls for several weeks, and broadcasters are joining in as well.
The Talking Stick tussle has brought the perceived lack of foul calls to the forefront of WNBA discussions this week.

Based on the data in the article, for all the whining we hear about the "big posts" getting beat up by the "little posts", it turns out guards are the ones seeing the largest the drop in foul calls.

It's basically about the 17th article that's crunched the numbers and ended up with "yeah, they've not been calling as many fouls". Super-complex.

In all sports that involve contact fouls, it is so common to hear people complain that the refs should just "let the players play." The WNBA is beginning to look like an example of what happens if you follow that principle to too much of an extreme.

One of the thing he did here that I liked was to take the variables of different shot selection and spacing out of it. Having those numbers on hand is useful. So at least this did add value to the mix and wasn't a total rehash.

Some of this could also be helpful about where the league should focus its attentions.

For instance, guards historically had the most foul calls (which makes sense as they have the ball in their hands the most). So if they were to keep the reduced rate of calls on guards as they were calling it, it would go a long way of keeping flow going and not having excessive foul trouble. And I don't think many fans would complain to see less ticky-tack call out 30, 40 feet from the basket, nor would they mind not having the guards being rewarded for out of control drives that were designed solely to generate contact.

And then they could tighten up their calls in the post where the contact was getting out of hand and bordering on ridiculous. And post players are also the most apt to actually adapt to how the game is being officiated. So if they tighten up calls, a lot of the liberties being taken right now will naturally disappear and they won't even need to be called.
