Oh, darn, you limited it to USA, forcing me to cheat on some of my real faves such as Sophia Loren, Helen Mirren and Ingrid Bergman. And then you use "actress" instead of "movie star", the latter incorporating not just acting ability but star power, music/dance ability, and sex appeal.
I expect this list would differ by the age of the respondents.
My favorite U.S. actress and movie star is Katherine Hepburn by far -- particularly works such as The Philadelphia Story, Bringing Up Baby, Little Women, The African Queen, Stage Door, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, and all the movies with Spencer Tracy, which younger audiences may not be as familiar with as movies from the last 40 years.
Other favorite U.S. movie stars/actresses would include Elizabeth Taylor, Shirley Temple, Shirley MacLaine, Sigourney Weaver, Anne Bancroft, Janet Leigh, Judy Garland, Doris Day, Jean Arthur. Streep is a very good actress but never had star power, musical or sex appeal to me. Also was never big on Davis or Crawford, who were good actresses. Affirmatively dislike Glenn Close for her name as well as her acting and looks. |
