even as i was living in rio, i thought the guy was already dead, he lived in such seclusion. curiously, he was just recently seen in public at his favorite churrascaria in leme, the neighborhood next door to copacabana. one of the great composers of all time. though the legitimate father of "bossa nova," he didn't particularly care for that genre label. his music, he said, was merely samba of another kind, as there are many kinds of samba.

"chega de saudade" is arguably the song that kicked off bossa nova (new wave).
