You could even go Courtney Vandersloot, Allie Quigley, Steinberga of Latvia, or a few others.

It was just intended as a vague approximation. It gets even easier to find the other non-Americans in a top-15 if you count naturalised players who are no longer American (Vandersloot, Toliver etc.).

I’m assuming Plum’s injury takes another young guard out of the Tokyo 2021 conversation.

Plum was far from a guaranteed spot.

USA Basketball dropped an interesting tidbit in an otherwise mundane article:
https://www.usab.com/news-events/news/2021/01/21-in-2021.aspx

It mentions that they have a 3x3 team in mind for qualifying. Will Plum even be remotely healthy enough to play on that special surface in late May? Will that be during the WNBA season?

Also, AmeriCup is theoretically going to be in June at the same time as EuroBasket. Are they going to risk an all-college team there without knowing for sure that they've won Gold at the Olympics? It also makes me wonder about availability for the Canadian players pre-Olympics.

I just talked to Carol Callan and she said college players will be used for the Americup in June, though it's possible a non-WNBA pro or two could be on the roster.

The U.S. needs to finish in the top four of the 10-team Americup or win the Olympics to advance to the next World Cup round in February 2022.

We should also know by May whether the Olympics will actually take place.

seems pretty short on guards there. Especially with two of the four into ancient territory. One injury and then what? I think you have to have at least one more ball handling guard. You going to have Stewie try to play point forward?

Was USA Basketball also going to include 3 x 3 Team at this camp. Many videos on twitter seemed to show them playing a lot of 3 x 3 scrimmages.

Clay just reposted the Core group that Shades had listed. And Shades just took the first 8 names who were listed as having won a Gold medal in either the Olympics or the FIBA World Championships and assumed the were the core group. There was no core group listed in the linked article.

The players that played on the team in the most recent qualifiers could just as well have been listed as the core group.

Those are senior team members who have represented USA at the games before, plus they’re at this camp. Plum was a member of the 2018 team, CGray was not. Diggins wasn’t a member of the 2018 team and she’s not at the camp. Double whammy for her. If Plum was on the team before and she cares enough to show up to the camp, I do think she’s at an advantage as long as she can perform.

Remember, it’s not always the very best players that make the team. Dedication matters. Being a team player matters.

So giving up European salaries to play on the qualification team last year does not count as being dedicated.

I did not mention Plum, but the fact that you brought up her name pretty much solidifys that your using the past medal wins on UDA teams was picked to favor her. What you consider as the core team means nothing to those who will pick it. This is an Olympic team not a FEBA team. As far as I am concerned the teams need to be picked in respect to who is is best today and not who was on previous teams.

Those that were on the past team got teir Gold medals and that is payoff enough for their commitment at that time. No one owes them anything. They got their medal and thats enough. Al those players who were invited are making a commitment this year. You make it sound like it is a great burdon to play on a USA team. And when someone does so they deserve our life long graditude.

if there are still Olympics this year I have

Bird/C. Gray
DT/Diggins-Smith/Plum or Loyd
EDD/McCoughtry
Stewart/N. Ogwumike/Wilson
Griner/Fowles

with Ogunbowale, Deshields, Charles and Collier trying to fight their way in or as injury/opt out replacements

If Ionescu is health, she should absolutely be on this team.

I agree but when I have said that in the past the response is she is be groomed for the 3x3 team

They will have to get her into a camp pretty soon if they are truly going to consider her. She does seem like the heir apparent to me. She would probably benefit greatly for consideration if the Olympics are postponed one more year.

Kelsey Plum Eyes 3x3 Roster Spot as She Returns from Achilles Injury
https://www.usab.com/news-events/news/2021/02/kelsey-plum-feature.aspx

Quote:
While playing 3x3 basketball in early June, Plum tore her left Achilles tendon.

“It was just kind of a freak thing,” Plum said. “It was one of the last possessions of the day. I just caught the ball on the wing, drove, and suddenly felt like someone s hot or kicked me. There was a loud pop, and I pretty much knew right away what had happened.”

I never realized she tore it during 3x3 qualifying. Did Team USA pay for her lost wages?

Quote:
The surgery was performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache, who had done a similar procedure on several professional players, including Plum’s USA teammate Breanna Stewart and Kobe Bryant.

Quote:
She worked on both her 5-on-5 and 3x3 game at the camp, as she continues to prepare for a trip to Austria as well as a possible spot on the 3x3 Olympic team at this year’s Tokyo Games.

Sounds like she’s more interested in the 3x3 team. Collier might also be leaning to the 3x3 team since she was on the qualifying team.
