Well, the Olympic committee has decided to postpone the games until 2021 with details still to be worked out.. They had said they would wait 15 days to decide but received so many requests for postponement form competing nations that they just went ahead and decided early.
This might change the dynamic of the team somewhat. It results in an extra year for the injured to get well and the old to get older.
One thing was stated- that it wouldn't start on July 24. Does that mean that they will start the games earlier? If so how much earlier.

They haven't announced anything, or officially decided anything. The only thing that changed today was that Dick Pound opened his mouth to USA Today. And the "won't start on July 24" just meant that they're not going to be starting as currently scheduled. It doesn't mean anything in regards to when they might start in 2021. |

If the games are postponed until summer 2021 (which to me seems one of the most likely alternative scenarios), will it be a bridge too far for Bird & Taurasi?

I am not opposed to the elder stateswomen vets but
2021 without the super vets
Gray/Ionescu
Diggins-Smith/Deshields/Plum or Ogunbowale
EDD/Collier
Stewart/N. Ogwumike/Wilson
Griner/Fowles (or McCowan)
I feel like Fowles is the super vet in best shape but you can rotate in McCowan if you prefer
again really just list making because I am board

Postponement does mean that Ionescu could have more of a chance to push her case for the main roster. Say we have a vaguely normal 2020 season in the end, and she has a Parker-esque rookie season where everything goes right in New York and maybe she's even on the periphery of an MVP conversation. It could look pretty silly for her to not be on the roster, even if it's as the third point-guard waiting her turn until Bird retires.
Unless they push the 3x3 angle, claiming that she means more as a big part of that team rather than an unnecessary bit-part of the main squad. |

no Bird or Taurasi for 2021 makes sense. Does Fowles sit out as well? She'll be 35 in 2021.
PG: Gray/Ionescu
SG: Diggins/Ogunbowale/Plum
SF: Delle Donne/DeShields
PF: Stewart/Wilson/Collier
C: Griner/N. Ogwumike

Maya could be back for 2021. I get that sense from her.
It took both Dantas and Shepard being out at the same time for Collier to get time at PF. She’s not an ideal PF. Delle Donne is more of an ideal PF.
Plum and Collier are both involved in 3x3, so that may indicate what direction their Team USA careers are headed.

Still grasping at the one straw that's left that Maya comes back?

An extra year could mean finding room for Teira McCowan.

Yeah, Sue and Diana will probably be worried players like Fowlse and Charles are getting too old and want to add some youth to their team.

They might actually lose a game if she plays.

I've loved watching Sue Bird her whole career, but I pray she retires gracefully after this season.

I think USA Basketball would still be the big favorite to win, even with Bird and Taurasi on the team in 2024. But if they are retired from the WNBA at that point USA Basketball probably won't go with them, even if they still want to play.

Just going by their play before their injuries, their game already looked diminished. Time already seemed to have taken its toll. They were still very good WNBA players who were a definite asset to their teams, but they certainly were not at the level or the dominant players they once were. There definitely were better players in the league at their positions. and that is based on the season before last.

The U.S. is likely good enough to win gold even without its best players. Bird and DT probably still can make it happen ...

Why? If she's still playing well.
She didn't look like a player that needed to retire the last time she played..
This generation of stars just has longevity. (And it goes beyond WNBA players)

I hate seeing stars wait until their skills are way diminished to go out. She's done a great job of keeping her body in shape but time still tells. She's always been a bit slow but now is quite a lot slower. She's always been a defensive liability, but now even more so. She is still clever and can still shoot. JMO it would be nice to retire before she becomes too far 'past it'
