WNBA preseason favorite: Washington Mystics are the 2019 front-runner

Quote:
If they stay healthy, the Mystics -- along with the Los Angeles Sparks and Las Vegas Aces -- should be one of the top contenders when the WNBA's 23rd season opens Friday. And because several other teams are facing some big questions, Washington might be a little ahead of the game.

"It's a very long offseason; it's tough to wait for it," Thibault said. "But as soon as you start getting near the draft, and know camp's not too far away, everybody gets excited. And when you have a good team coming back and you see the potential -- and you know that you can grow from the experience you had last year -- we have a lot to look forward to."

With standouts such as 2015 MVP Elena Delle Donne (20.7 PPG in 2018) and Kristi Toliver (13.9 PPG) back, and Belgium's Emma Meesseman (14.1 PPG in 2017) rejoining the team, the Mystics are talented. Add in players such as Ariel Atkins, who had a strong rookie season (11.3 PPG), and veterans LaToya Sanders (10.2) and Natasha Cloud (8.6), and the Mystics could pick up where they left off last season.

I think it’s time for Sue to retire. Let someone else take the reins. And yeah, they are in the lottery now and it’s ridiculous because everyone knows they’ll be rewarded the #1 pick by the WNBA. Lets make sure we keep stacking the western conference full while the eastern conference gets nowhere.

Yes retire after having one of your best seasons EVER while being the oldest player in the league Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes and playing a huge part in why your team won the championship.

Please dont insult Bird and us Storm fans with this kind of BS..

I want a do over with my predictions. I didn't know the Sky would trade for JLav and Bird might miss the entire 2019 season.

1. WAS: Big gap after Mystics already.
2. CON: Jonquel gets to play, maybe they can avoid Mercury in playoffs.
3. LAS: No bench, but still lot of high-end talent.
4. ATL: Need to find more scoring but like Collen in Yr 2.
5. PHO: Griner is very good, rest of Mercury is not (w/DT starting out).
6. LVA: Not my Title Favorites. Aja/Liz will try not to step on each other.
7. SEA: Still a lot good young pieces, but Stewart/Hughes are irreplaceable.
8. MIN: Sims should work out well. After Fowles, no clue here.
9. CHI: They should score, and benefit from improved coaching? Big upside?
10. DAL: They could be ok by year's end? Big struggle to start. Who is scoring?
11. IND: Shenise nice return. Got to play less Dupree/Kelsey. Laney nice grab.
12. NYL: Ugly after Tina. Need a jump from Nurse, for Durr to be good.

I guess I'll give it a go... Hard to figure this year with too many injury questions at the start of the season (Bird, Diana, Parker, Delle Donne, etc.)

1 - Mystics
2 - Sparks
3 - Sun
4 - Aces
5 - Dream
6 - Mercury
7 - Sky
8 - Storm
9 -Wings
10- Lynx
11- Fever
12- Liberty

It's nice to see so little consensus for the top two! Makes for a more interesting season.

The results of the survey from the first post came out like this:

Of the 63 entries,
24 had Mystics as #1
16 had Aces #1
8 had Sparks #1
6 has Mercury #1
5 had Sun #1
3 entries were from impossible homers
1 prankster had Wings #1

35 entries had the Fever as #12
14 had Liberty as #12
10 had Wings
3 had Sky
1 had Mystics (so actually I'm thinking maybe one participant misunderstood the order)

Full results:

Although we've picked a clear bottom 4, it's probably slightly skewed because there were already quite a few entries in before the Sue Bird news was announced.

    1- WAS Exclamation
    2- LV Razz
    3- LA Shocked
    4- CON Idea
    5- PHX Confused
    6- ATL Question
    7- CHI
    8- MIN
    9- SEA
    10 - DAL
    11 - NYL
    12 - IND

About a month ago, I picked CON to win the Finals... then the Chiney trade happened and I switched to LA... then the Cambage trade happened, now I'm All In on Las Vegas... Party Time! Excellent! Razz

But as for regular season records, I look at teams that have been consistently good who are returning the same roster with upgrades. This should mean that early in the season, they won't lose games while they're working on their chemistry.

WAS rates high because of that, and also has a relatively less difficult schedule than others.

LV has a very balanced starting 5 and are catching several of the likely playoff teams while they have star players injured.

With Parker injured, and a new coach, LA falls to 3rd due to the uncertainty of how they'll develop under their new coach.

CON is still high in my esteem, and PHX is lower due to the Taurasi injury.

ATL/CHI could go either way, I like them both, and then everybody else is in the same boat.

MIN tops the rest because of Fowles and Dan Hughes, who is known for figuring out how to do more with less, is not ready.

I think that ATL stands for Atlanta? No idea who put them there, but everything else seems ok at this point of the season.

Revisiting this cuz it's being talking about in the Lynx 2020 thread & the Lynx were one of the many teams I mis-predicted (amongst many others - guess I was on cr@ck when doing this, maybe I should just stick to draft predictions in the future)...

1. Las Vegas Embarassed
2. Los Angeles
3. Connecticut
4. Minnesota Embarassed
5. Washington Embarassed Embarassed
6. Phoenix
7. Atlanta Embarassed Embarassed
8. Dallas
9. Seattle Embarassed
10. Indiana
11. Chicago Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed
12. New York

I didn't get a single one right Mr. Green

I didn't post picks, but I too missed on the Sky. I thought that they'd probably miss on the playoffs. I was high on Washington and the Aces. Right now, I'm still high on Washington--if I had to pick a team of the ones left, they're the one.

I wisely didn't make picks...so didn't embarrass myself.
