Bengaluru, India was recently confirmed as the host of Division A tournament. The expected teams are competing as the hosts won promotion two years ago and join Japan, Australia, China, South Korea (for now not competing as a unified team), Taiwan, New Zealand, and the Philippines.

Division B details are still not out, but American Samoa and Fiji were in the top two places at the recent Pacific Games and theoretically qualified for future events with those placements.

Thanks as always ...

Kelli Hayes is Filipino? -- and my favorite name is Jack Danielle Aninam, National University. Wonder what they were drinking on the night she was conceived ...

Looks like a three-team race: Australia, China and maybe New Zealand.

They could also have a St. Mary's reunion ...

Japan have won the last three Asia Cups, by the way.

Kelli's mother is Filipino. Unfortunately, their citizenship rules are sufficiently complicated that they are unlikely to ever be able to suit up a bunch of Americans unlike say Nigeria. Props to her for grad transferring to National University though. College sports in the Philippines is at a hysterical level of shamateurism. Illegal benefits are so large that men's basketball players and other star athletes make sure to completely exhaust their eligibility because they have to take pay cuts when they turn professional. Also, most of the players barely even try to do anything school related while they are there.

NZL is not nearly as good as Japan.

Looks like Li Yueru is still the preferred center for China even though Han Xu was drafted 21 spots earlier. 🤔

She stayed home to work with the team and the coaches

Obviously she stayed home, but before the draft Han Xu was reportedly staying home also. That was some shady ish.

The real question, if they were both to come over, who is the better player if you don’t trust Team China’s judgement. I’d like to find out.

Li is currently the better player. But in terms of potential, Han has a very high ceiling. Han also appears to play more of the 4 with China than center.

I'm Chinese and I have said this before: Despite her many weaknesses (turnover/foul prone, small hand etc.) Li Yueru is in my opinion the better player because she forces the defense to make the most adjustment. Defensively, Han is better especially on help defense, but Li is closing the gap - she has improved a lot on defense. Han has the higher ceiling.

They are different players. Li is a traditional center. Han is a face-the-basket type of player. In my view, Li will likely remain the more important player of China because Han appears to me to dislike contact. Also I'm not sure about the WNBA thing in hindsight. Li made the wiser decision by playing with the national team this summer where she played against top European teams (Spain, France, Belgium, etc. right before Eurobasket), as well as Japan, Senegal, and Puerto Rico. While Han rotted on the bench (with a bad team no less).

There is a very young player on the Chinese team that I think could become a very good player for China for a long time. Probably not WNBA talent, but I'll throw out her name nonetheless: Chen Mingling, 19 years old, 6'4'' or so, never played a game of professional basketball. Got called up to the NT from the U19 team (because the army club refused to release its NT players like Sun Mengran, Pan Zhenqi) and really made an impression against all sorts of opponents.

Is Chen Mingling draft eligible? I know China's Li Yuan is(PG).

Recap:

The really important game is Philippines-India even though I am sure the other 6 teams want a trophy.

It says 2000-born, so she is unless they change the rules. Li has not been great this tournament and neither has Park so it has not been that intriguing from a draft perspective.

It does seem like there's a pretty clear and consistent top-3 in Australia/China/Japan, and then they might as well just have a big playoff for the fourth Asian spot in the Olympic qualifiers. Whoever that fourth team is, I'd like them in Great Britain's group, please.

Looking forward to South Korea-New Zealand again in the qualifiers after they were drawn into the same group.

Nothing I read said anything about how they seeded the draw - I would assume it wasn't just a free draw, in case China/Australia/Japan all ended up in the same group. But however they did it, Taiwan got kinda screwed. History says they've often been competitive for the fourth spot in the region, but they've got absolutely no chance of going through from a group including Japan and Australia.

Bronze medal game was a fizzer - Korea had nothing left in the tank.
China-Japan for the gold has been a really good one. Japan up by 3 going into the 4th quarter.

Han Xu was very good in the final, but Nako Motohashi was brilliant.
Japan gets the gold with a 3 point win.

Maybe her season with the Liberty helped her after all even though she didn't get to play much.

Han and Bec Allen named to the All-Star Five.

I remember Motohashi playing well in the World Cup last year. Maybe in 2021, some WNBA team should give her a look. Only 5-5, but with FLB, Canada, and Dangerfield coming, she won't seem that small anymore.

I doubt either Motohashi or even Ramu Tokashiki play next season. Japan will prep for awhile to try and win a medal in their home country.
