Good. She said she wanted to play one more season or two. So what happened? No one wanted her thats what. Glad she’s gone. Always hated her ever since she tweeted that Japan got what they deserved in regards to the earthquake/devastating tsunami a few years back because of Pearl Harbour. Sorry, but she’s a disgusting person.

One of the most underappreciated players of all-time. Doesn't get enough credit for the two championships she helped Phoenix win, and should've been named finals mvp two times, not once.

Thanks for the memories Cappie.

I'm with you on this one. Plus her use of a derogatory term for Japanese people. Then there's also her rabid support for Matee Ajavon who smack talked Ann Strother about her abuse by her high school coach. Both actions represent reprehensible character.

She was named finals MVP one time, and deservedly so.

She was listed 5'9" I see, but I think she got an extra inch roster-boost. I see her as the best player in league history at her height.

Her time was up. Should have announced that 2018 was her final to get the final send off.

Correction, Cappie should've won 2 finals MVP's.

Cappie's clearly not happy about retiring. She's lashing out on Twitter, most notably against Voepel. Not a way to go out, Cappie.

It's on brand, though. She feels underappreciated and isn't afraid to say so.

On brand, yes. It is a different question as to whether it is objectively accurate...

Wow the nastiness is unbelievable . She still gave us all exciting basketball to watch regardless of her off the court demeanor / opinions. This thread is to praise her career as a player not a person . No need to call her B words and diminish her career based off personal outlooks .

Considering a sports journalist was praising her career and Cappie herself lobbied the first verbal barrage, the reaction can be understand, as it is reacting to what Cappie herself just did.

As an aside (and since it was raised in this thread), I am posting the

Pondexter tweets illustrate bigger issue
Mar 15, 2011
Mechelle Voepel (espnW.com)

Japan is facing a potential nuclear catastrophe, on top of the killer earthquake and tsunami that already have destroyed so much. It's impossible to comprehend how anyone could look at what's happening there and express anything but empathetic solidarity with these suffering people.

Yet, as you've probably heard, the New York Liberty's Cappie Pondexter wrote a series of messages on Twitter over the weekend suggesting God might have intentionally afflicted Japan with these disasters. Then she speculated about what reasons the Almighty could have had for orchestrating such horrors.

Along with mindboggling insensitivity, Pondexter's tweets appeared to apply a negative stereotype to an entire nation. Thus, she opened a door to a Twitter backlash against her remarks that has turned extremely ugly.

Voepel's always been endlessly reasonable and even-handed, sometimes to a fault, and Cappie jumped on her when all she did was praise Cappie's career and quote her own exit post. It was ridiculous and sadly appropriate for Pondexter. We should be talking about a player who was electrifying at her peak and remembering what she achieved on the court - instead it's back to the off-court stuff and the attitude. It's just a shame.

A pretty scathing column not only towards Pondexter but also the Liberty and to some extent the WNBA leadership (which ironically lacked also a President at the time the column was published. Times haven't changed much.)

No question Pondexter looks like a belligerent fool now (maybe she will have career in politics.) But Voepel probably should have just let Cappies retirement happen w/o comment. I doubt anyone would have noticed. Then again, maybe she just wanted to give Cappie one last chance to make ass of herself.

Yeah, I think she was appreciated back when she was playing at that level. Plenty thought she was worthy of being Finals MVP for both of those Mercury titles, and at her peak she was up there with the best backcourt scorers the league has seen.
But her decline seemed to start relatively early in her career, and it feels like she has spent most of it being less effective that the year before. That doesn't make for a great legacy.
I'll always remember her Phoenix years fondly though.

No one has been harsher on Cappie than I have...no need to rehash the history

I do think Cappie needs the respect she earned in Phoenix and her first 2 seasons in NY)

But her mouth has consistently outweighed her skills from attacking fans burning bridges or just being innapropriate (the fashion week comments during the playoffs come to mind)she's been her own worst enemy her attack on voepel is just par for the course

Hall of fame numbers? Yep

Hall of fame person...nope

Hall of fame as a player well see how many folks she pissed off in media.

Cappie played for five teams. I think she only left New York on good terms.

Leaving Pondexter out of the HOF would be problematic. Her numbers and accomplishments are well ahead of many likely candidates and even some that are already inducted. It's tough to make a case that Becky Hammon, for example, had a better career than Pondexter. Somebody like Alana Beard isn't even in the ballpark.
