"Hello, and welcome to WNBA.com. Did we mention that this is not a league for lesbians? Hell no! What's a lesbian? We love our Valentine's day like we love our civil rights -- for heterosexuals only!"
Ok, I know it's harsh, but I couldn't resist.

this is some crazy shit. trying to apply contemporary (and typically western) standards of human relationships to the animal world is probably the cardinal sin of behavioral science. penguins are no more gay than the ancient romans were. sexual idenitites are historically specific categories, not immutable truths.

Exactly, Caune. They found three players, not necessarily three straight players.
Incidentally, the best Adrian story (besides my telling her to come home and change for wearing the DKNY top with sandals) was MB telling the religious Adrian that G-d wants her to rebound!

Good, they managed to find 3 straight players ;-)
Sorry, couldn't resist either... |
well not exactly
They did find 3 players though  |
Can I at least assume that they thought they were straight then? ;-) |
Yes. That was probably the case. |
...and what difference does it make? Those are just three goofy or embarrasing stories about gilrs and Valentine's Day.
But that zoo thing is a trip...I gotta admit.

Well, I, for one, am simply mortified that the WNBA would allow a woman who was having sexual thoughts (about freckles!) as a 9 year-old to play in the league. It's an abomination.
Think of the pressure on all those preteen girls who attend the games and look up to the women who play as role models! Mark my words, before long, these young girls wil be calling boys' toenails sexy! And their elbows! And even their boogers!!!!!
We have to let 9 year olds know that having sexual thoughts about people is totally inapropriate, and the way to do that is to see to it that Diana Taurasi never darkens a basketball court in America again. What a terrible influence.
It's all about family values. The nuclear family is under seige in America, and it's time we stood up for what we believe in.

it wasn't just about girls -- it was about girls liking boys. would you ever, ever expect to see becky hammon's funny story about some crazy thing her partner did to her on valentine's day? or what about spoon's special valentine's day memory?
i'm not saying they should feel compelled to offer a queer-friendly valentine's day feature, but the whole thing just seemed kind of gratuitous to me. i mean, the stories were pretty damn stupid, and even more pointless. why bother?
if you are a queer person confronting the drama of a holiday that exists primarily to praise heterosexual courtship, you know where i'm coming from.

Valentines Day is designed to #1 extort money out of people and #2 stress people out. Some singles stress over not being in a relationship and couples stress about what to do on Valentines Day. I ignore it: it's just another Hallmark holiday. |

Keegs,
If you weren't so rich and adorable, not to mention half-a-world-away, I would marry you.
You hit it right on the nose.

right, it's all about enforcing the social imperative to maintain order through heterosexual marriage. if a couple greedy capitalists can co-opt it, all the better.
let's also remember that valentine's day is just one of many holidays -- along with christmas -- manipulated by catholicism to coopt pagan celebrations. it's all about bringing celebrations of love and fertility under the watchful --and disciplining -- gaze of the church.

oh, don't be such scrooges. Yeah, Hallmark sucks. So don't buy cards.
Just look at the holiday as reminder, reason, excuse to take another night and spend it with your partner.... take advantage of it.

I read that too quickly as "an excuse to take advantage of your partner on another night." LOL

So which one is it?
Maybe G-d also wants Adrian to catch the ball. It would give new meaning to the term "Hand of G-d"! |
