genero, your polls make me crazy. they’re impossible! i mean, unless someone or something is far and away without peer (like secretariat, who won the belmont by 31 lengths - clearly, the greatest racehorse of all time), it’s just so much mental masturbation. but i was listening to your samples, and ella’s rendition of "one note samba" instantly led me to the original brasilian song "samba de uma nota só" and the rendition by brasilian leny andrade, whose husky voice has been likened to sarah vaughn’s. so i’m not voting on who’s the best scatter of all time, acknowledging subjectivity, and especially time and generations (which allow later singers to benefit from and improve on the craft of the pioneers), but i’m sharing this sample of the song in its brasilian form, scatted by the great leny andrade and featuring the brilliant guitarist, romero lubambo. for what it’s worth, she could be added to the list.
